Bucs boards making national news

PFT: Bucs dealing with realities of online message boards

Like most if not all NFL teams, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a bulletin board feature on their official web site, allowing teams to post messages and otherwise interact.

For the bad teams, "interaction" quickly becomes "venting."

And the fans of the Bucs are venting by applying an unflattering nickname to first-year coach Raheem Morris.

Per JoeBucsFan.com, they're calling Morris "Radio," the title character of a movie in which Cuba Gooding, Jr. plays a developmentally disabled man who finds acceptance with a local high school football team.

And now the moderator of the Buccaneers' bulletin board has asked fans to stop using the name.

Which, of course, will only cause them to use it more aggressively.

But here's the reality -- if you're going to have a bulletin board or a comments section and you want to keep the people who visit it from using certain terms or names, the only alternative to screening the submitted content by hand is to not have a bulletin board or a comments section at all.

Or to grow thicker skin.

As anyone who peruses from time to time the PFT comments, you'll realize that we've opted generally for door number three.

And I'm glad we did. Otherwise, I never would have known that my last name can be twisted into so many, um, colorful alternatives.

Ouch :(

I always thought the Panthers decision to close their boards was petty and thin-skinned.

Yeah, it's all a reflection of Richardson. He wants everything related to the Panthers to be family oriented.

I agree with the last part of that article. If teams want a message board on their official site, either grow thick skin or just don't have one in the first place.

I actually agree with the 'family atmosphere' at the stadium. I just think it's poorly planned and executed.

Other teams still manage a family atmosphere without reining in fan enthusiasm. It just seems to be the Panthers who can't find that balance.

    • Yeah, I am not 100% against trading down but it needs to be at the right price. Also, because this appears to be a draft lacking in a lot of elite prospects, trading down could potentially backfire(as it always can, I suppose) or net a lower yield than typical. I just don't want to be fumbling around and reaching, which in the Tepper era has been a CONSTANT problem. The organizational impatience(and incompetence) been murderous.
    • Yeah I said that earlier all or most of these guys are broadcasting or doing the little Huddle show and stuff like that, they are affiliated this season.  I think Cam went in using the ESPN tack because it stuck it to Tepper and didn't criticize a player and that worked for him. Plus he ended up working for ESPN.....
    • Sports are a different animal. It's gladiator poo. You wouldn't go out and put the uniform on of the best burger maker in your neighborhood either. So, when we watch these athletes being amazing and giving their all, it is for more than just a check. The guys that are truly driven and love these games, they are doing it for many more reasons than the money. Boiling it down to a simple transactional thing is simplistic, at best. So, yeah, I can understand how Cam can feel jilted when other great Panthers are trotted out and honored by the organization and he isn't. Especially considering he is overwhelmingly the best QB to have ever played for us and literally put this franchise into the national spotlight because of the player he was, the things he accomplished and the personality that he is. So....yeah, I would be upset about that too if I were in his shoes. The money, that the business side. That other poo, that's personal.
