Andrew Norwell news from Pro Football Talk

I'm happy for the guy. Hope he recovers well & earns the money he's signed for.

IMO, it's all about time together & injuries, injuries & injuries. During 3 of our most successful seasons ('03, '08, '15), we succeeded with an injury-free O-line. When you think about past SB contenders/champs, you realize:

The FalCunts made it to the SB with an injury-free O-line in '16.

Eagles won the SB with an injury-free O-line in '17 (except for Peters)

Rams made it to the SB with an injury-free O-line last year.

No one has a crystal ball seeing injury so that's not reason not to pay Norwell.

We spent money on the Kalil's instead of Norwell. There is no such thing as overpaying Norwell when you sign Matt and give Ryan a farewell tour. The money was already wasted, but it should have been wasted on Norwell and not Matt.

We are still paying Matt Kaili slightly less money than Norwell is making and Matt isn't even on the team anymore. Neither is Ryan after his farewell tour. The smartest move never happened. Should've kept Norwell and never signed Matt. There is no option of not overpaying for one or the other in the scenario so in the end, I would have rather overpaid Norwell instead of overpaid Matt and stuck a traffic cone at LT.

I've always been a proponent of the "pay tackles and draft guards" philosophy. You for sure can't afford to carry two big money guards and we already had ourselves tied up in one in Trai. Norwell was a great player for us in our system but even still, his athletic limitations were pretty apparent. It's not surprising that he underwhelmed in a system that likely asked more of him due to his paycheck. As good as Norwell was for us, his play never came close to screaming "highest paid OG in NFL history". No clue what the Jags we're thinking on that one.

I think this sums up things perfectly. If I could give you more than 1 positive ranking if I would. :)

Having Norwell at LG would’ve been an upgrade over what we had but LG wasn’t our only problem. QB’s we’re getting killed and Norwell wouldn’t have changed that.

Of course I’m glad he got his, also glad that it wasn’t Carolina who gave it to him

I love Norwell.  Great story and great player.  He was integral to our team making the Super Bowl in 2015.  Going from Silatolu to Norwell was an upgrade of massive proportions.  Norwell remains one of Gettleman's best moves.

Just couldn't afford him here.  I hope he does well, just not against us this year.

That being said, I think it worked out for well for both sides.  Norwell got paid and we got a extra 3rd rounder.  The comp pick we received from Norwell was used to draft Will Grier.  Given the relative importance of each position to the overall team, that is a trade off a good GM makes every single time.
