Make the Depth Chart for the Front Seven for Each Defensive Front

With McCoy signed and back to little reserves in cap funds, it's safe to say this is the bunch heading into training camp.  So list your front seven depth chart going into regular season for both defensive fronts.  I figure it would be an interesting exercise.  I mean we could continue on about FS for the next seven-eight weeks, right?

3/4

                 DE                             NT                 DE

McCoy/Love/Cox Jr.   Poe/Bulter    KK/ Love/Obada

SLB                                          BLB              MLB                             WLB

Shaq/Carter/Haynes   Miller/Smith    Luke/Norris      Irvin/Burns/Addison

4/3

DE                                           DT                                        DT                                         DE

Cox Jr./Addison        McCoy/Poe/Butler             KK/Love/Bulter                     Obada/Addison

SLB                                            MLB                                               WLB

Shaq/Carter/Hanyes         Luke/Norris/Smith             Burns/Irvin/Miller

I have 17, but think we will probably only keep 16.  I can't decide who will go.  I'm thinking Smith, but we shall see.  He can be stashed on the practice squad if need be.   Haynes is the other candidate to go to the practice squad.

I see you have us only going with 14 in the front seven.  Is that a bit thin?  I agree Smith may be the odd man out of the LBs.  Cutting Obada makes us really thin in a even front unless we kick a DT out there. Looks good though!

I wouldnt say extremely thin

We are going to be running mire 3 man fronts than not with the 4 man sprinkled in.  Most likely those 4 man fronts will be jumbo style sets, where Kk who has shown he can play outside will be the SDE in the 4-3.

No team can carry a full depth chart that can fully suit a 4-3 and 3-4.

Irvin and Addison have plenty of experience in even front to be able to slide there when needed

We have so many guys on one-year deals or one-year remaining that I think this is a test run those guys.  That's the reason I feel we will carry an extra couple guys than in 2020 and beyond.  Unless Irvin has a Pro Bowl type year I expect him just to be a tutor this season for the young guys.  There's too many of them vying for that WLB spot in 3-4.  I'm not sure Addison makes a successful conversion either.

This

Im actually wary of Addison in this new D.  Thus why I think Burns and Irvin will be our starters

Of course if you want to run a 3-4 you need more DTs than DEs. I think Bruce Irvin and Antwione Williams will help our LBs in the 3-4. They're the only 2 with NFL experience there. Wouldn't be surprised to carry a 7th DT though if they want more depth on the 3-4 DL.

4-3
LE: Mario Addison - Bryan Cox Jr.
DT: Kawann Short - Vernon Butler - #Destiny Vaeao#
DT: #Gerald McCoy# - Dontari Poe - #Kyle Love#
RE: *Brian Burns* - Marquis Haynes
SLB: #Bruce Irvin# - *Christian Miller*
MLB: Luke Kuechly - Andre Smith - Antwione Williams
WLB: Shaq Thompson - Jermaine Carter Jr.

3-4
LDE Kawann Short - #Destiny Vaeao#
NT: Dontari Poe - #Kyle Love#
RDE: #Gerald McCoy# - Vernon Butler
LOLB: #Bruce Irvin# - *Christian Miller* - Bryan Cox Jr.
LILB: Luke Kuechly - Andre Smith - Antwione Williams
RILB: Shaq Thompson - Jermaine Carter Jr.
ROLB: *Brian Burns* - Marquis Haynes - Mario Addison

This. Can move all the backup olb in any order behind Burns and Irvin.

Think Burns stays on the field a ton. Near Luke level of burn. Versatile dude out there. Think the other OLB role is 35-40% Irvin (experience and versatility) and then everyone else gets a share based on matchup and keeping them fresh. Irvin isn't a guy to rely on anymore but his experience will help till the others get up to speed.

–Defensive ends Bryan Cox Jr. and Efe Obada both look like they’ve added a good amount of bulk. It makes sense considering they could each be asked to help as traditional 4-3 ends or as ends in odd fronts. But Cox Jr. said he’s only put on about 2 pounds. Obada, though, is plus-15.

....FYI when thinking about where to slot these two.

I see you have us carrying 17 in the front seven too.  So you think Vaeao will take Obada's spot and Williams is taking Norris'?  Interesting.   So far Smith appears to be the odd guy out.  I tentatively put him in my depth chart, but stipulated if we only carry 16, he's my choice to go.

I really miss the games when we had a dominant defense.   Watching our line crush everyone is way better than touchdowns.  Hopefully we can do both this year.

Yeah, I'm stoked about switching to a 3-4 because I'm old enough to remember the first years of the Panthers defense in the 3-4 under Capers that absolutely smothered opposing offenses.  That was until a few years later when those players started to show their age.

You need 3-4 DL. Obada isn't that. Like I said, Williams and Irvin are the only NFL 3-4 experienced guys. Yeah Norris could beat him, but I think Williams is more valuable at this point. You also need depth on the inside at both ILB spots in the 3-4. I would think we would need more guys there because if a guy goes down, then you only have 1 backup for both spots. But yeah I could see carrying only four 3-4 ILBs as well. It all depends who shows up in preseason.
