The Panthers pulled off a coup in free agency today, signing coveted defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. McCoy had offers from the Browns and the Ravens, but in the end he decided to pick Carolina instead. McCoy says choosing the Panthers was about the fit and the chemistry and he seems to have a lot of faith in head coach Ron Rivera.

Here’s what McCoy had to say about his decision, per David Newton at ESPN.

“Carolina was a great fit for me. Being around the guys we just meshed & I love the instant chemistry we had. They have a tradition of having a great defense. I love the players & I believe in #1. Ron Rivera is a proven coach & can’t wait to get started.”

In related news, Jourdan Rodrigue at the Charlotte Observer reports several players had lunch with McCoy on Friday, including some team captains, which played a huge part in persuading him.

Why Gerald McCoy Will Love the Panthers (and Vice Versa)

• The Panthers felt good about their situation on Gerald McCoy over the weekend—and the celebration outside Marty Hurney’s office on Monday afternoon showed it was well-placed. This, of course, was telegraphed all along. McCoy identified the Ravens and Browns at the outset, and planned to visit both, then reset and either sign with one of them or re-open the process. He didn’t sign with Baltimore or Cleveland, obviously, which made the next team he’d visit the favorite to get him. And in Carolina, McCoy will get to play in an aggressive upfield scheme that fits his game, next to an interior presence, in K.K. 100% guarantee if you order that (or anything close to it) on eBay right now both logos will be horrible off-centered and the sleeves will not fit firmly around your biceps.
