Junking a car?

Bronn

Recommended Posts

Anyone here ever junked a car? By that, I mean selling to a junkyard or some other sort of buyer/recycler.

I’ve got a near 20 years old car that I was going to try to sell, but upon a good cleaning inside and out I discovered that it had developed some big issues after sitting out, not being driven for over a year.

I could probably make it drivable again with $100 or so of parts and some elbow grease, but I was going to be lucky to get $1200 or so out of it to begin with.

I got like 400 bucks a few years ago for a 94 grand cherokee that blew the transmission.  Call up the yard and see what they require.  My BIL had a flatbed trailer with a come along.  We got it up and they plucked it off the trailer with a magnet. I was required to remove the gas tank.  That was easy enough to drop out of the Jeep.  I got rid of the gas later at a local hazardous materials drive they had in my County.  It wasn't so bad.

Can I ask what region of the state, assuming it is NC, this was in? I haven’t called up any yards yet.

Basically, it is now dumping all the coolant out of the bottom somewhere. I’m thinking it is a hose or freeze plug or something but haven’t had time, or cool enough weather, to crawl underneath.

Obviously since it has no coolant it gets hot fast. I don’t think anything else is damaged. I can’t let it run long enough for the battery to charge, lol, so that’s another thing that I might have to replace if I do try to sell it.

It’s a 2002 Chevy Cavalier with almost 200k miles. Before I parked it a long time ago, the only real issues were cosmetic.

I just hate to junk it and lose out on an extra $500 or so, lol.

I got $200 on a trade in with a 1999 Daewoo Lanos (not kidding) when I got a new Honda. The salesman had to bring out the manager and he said they can just junk it. I told them to please just take it lmao.

I did about a year ago in NC (Cabarrus County).  Had a 1999 Toyota Camry with 200,000 miles that I originally bought new and handed down to my son several years back. He drove it up for Christmas and said he needed to get it inspected. I got in the thing and the struts and suspension were completely gone and it was so unsafe to drive. Gave him my Lexus and took it straight to the recycle/junk yard and it was simple. I never considered selling it even though the engine was still in great shape and didn't use a drop of oil.

He had lost the title but even then, because of the year of the car I as able to junk it without the title. Think I got about $300-$350 for it and had to do nothing but drive it to them.

Johnston County. It might be worth it to find the leak, if it's just a water pump or busted hose or radiator, it's not a hard fix. Easily find your parts at the junk yard and re-plumb the system and bleed the air out. Turn a 200 dollar junk into a 1k craigslist beater.

That’s kinda what I was thinking of doing. I’m comfortable working on cars, it’s just a matter of finding the time and the parts.

If you decide just to junk, make sure you call every place in the area. Sometimes junk prices vary. I think when I junked mine it was $9 per 100lbs for a vehicle. Other places were 7.50 or 8.  I'd only try to save it if it was going to be worth something after fixing.

    • I know most of this place doesn't favor Bryce, so I'm preaching to the choir. Also - screw the Broncos and Peyton.   Okay, with that being said... Seeing what Nix has done this season is something we should all tune into.  Why?  His first two games were, well bad would be putting it lightly.  He looked in over his head, pro-level shocked, you could see the anxiousness.  He needed to settle down in the pocket and adjust to the game.  And you know what? He did just that.     And as the season has progressed, he has got better and better each week. All this through OL injuries and weapons like Sutton, Vele (who?), Lil'Jordan Humphrey (who?) & Mims, he has managed to ascend and bring himself into ROTY contention over Jayden Daniels & Brock Bowers.   And he's making advanced throws, layering in the second level, put them in position to beat KC the other week until the ST unit lost it. The short version of my point - Bryce's recent "progression" is relative.  This is the type of progression you would like to see as a season goes on and a kid gets adjusted to the pace of the NFL. Bo Nix Notable 2024 Stats (Through 11 games): 19 TDs (14 pass, 4 rush, 1 rec), 6 INTs, 2,275 pass yards, 295 rushing, 65.5% comp, 6.4 YPA Last 5 games: 10 TD, 1 INT, 1,193 pass yards, 115 rushing, 70.6% comp, 7.4 YPA
