Short/McCoy could be comparable to Suh/Donald last year.  Think of how clean Kuechly will be roaming in the middle to make tackles with those two not letting blockers get to the 2nd level

Let Poe eat up a couple of blockers and let those boys get to QB.  The way to slow Brees down especially is pressure up the gut.

Collapsing the pocket will also obviously allow our speed guys to get home b/c QB's can't step up

If we can collapse the pocket up the middle QBs can't step up in the pocket to avoid the rush. It makes our outside blitzers that more effective.  Thinking about that is what made me change my mind about spending the cash to have both of them here.

It started when we were up 35-7 on Tampa and they had 3 straight 65+ yard TD drives and looked like we couldn’t stop a fly.

It started before that. We were up and down for the early part of the season,  but the Falcons and Giants shredded our defense.  The Giant game was particularly bad because their offense at that point wasn't very good.  3 of their previous 4 games, they didn't crack 20 points.  The Falcons relaxed in the 4th, or they probably would have scored 38 at least.

Yep. We were lucky to have that early win streak. Defense was bad, just hadn't been exposed. Many of us saw it. Offense clicking was the only reason we were in those games at all. Defense getting exposed and unable to adjust coupled with Cams shoulder shutting down was when the record turned south.

It wasn't until Rivera took over the D that the defense looked ok.

Of course that still begs the question, why the hell did it take so long for that to happen?

Question #2, will Rivera hand the reigns of the defense back to Washington if things start going well? I hope freedom to make that decision is taken away if he is tempted to do it.

I suspect it took that long because it was a pretty novel idea for him to take over duties himself and demote Washington. Most times you suffer through and can the DC at the end of the year. It had to be Hurney/Tepper or both who suggested the shift and after thinking about it decided he was the best guy for the job. Got to keep Washington as a defensive line coach with a big title.

Washington will have control of the defense and do the drills and board work during the week but Rivera will have final say, will be involved in everything and will send the defensive plays into Kuechly on game day.
