*if McCoy were to sign*

Makes me wonder if we are bringing in (trying to) more than one 285 plus guy.

Obada and Cox Jr. are both one one-year deals too, which further makes me think that the 4-3 is about to go the way of the Dodo bird.  Think about it, we drafted no traditional DE's, not even 5-techs, signed none in FA  and only committed to keeping the couple of guys from last year for just this season.

Let's scrap the specific position designations for the group for a minute and simply call them DL and LB.  We have 14 guys playing LB in camp and I figure we will keep 9.  So 5 need to be cut of which 4 are camp bodies.  Done.  Next we have 10 defensive linemen in camp and we will probably keep 7.  There's easily 4 camp bodies here.  So we have room for an upgrade or either will keep a fringe guy.

The reason I did that is if you look at positions for guys on the Panthers official home page, it makes no sense if you are trying to assemble a 53 man roster or depth chart.  I think they are intentionally keeping things 'not updated' to have some mystery around who is doing what.  Again the whole hybrid thing I think is a smoke screen and we will run 4-3 sets simply to ease into the 3-4; to be almost completely phased out by the the end of the year.  By then the 4-3 will be the wrinkle and not the base defense.

Depth at DE is an issue why I can't understand skipping out on a 3-4 end in the draft. I went back and looked, there were some solid guys available when we took other players.  The Scarlett pick in the fifth was the prime spot, but we opted to take a guy who is going to be on the sidelines a lot watching CMC.  Charles Omenhiu, Joe Jackson and Isaiah Buggs were all still on the board.

I agree we could have found better de depth late in the draft but Scarlett may be a serious game hidden gem. His speed with minimal wear and tear may make him a sub we really enjoy he’s a big play waiting to happen. After chasing cmc around the change of pace back is faster and very elusive if scarlet is our backup we should have a dominate two back system. I feel like his impact should and will be bigger then any impact from a late draft DE.

Unless the staff changes their plans with CMC, the back up guy will be a prominent spectator.  I wouldn't buy into the 'goofy time talk' a.k.a. off season coach-speak, about them seriously reducing CMC's touches.

Considering we have no young guys in the pipeline (Butler is history) for the DL especially in the 3-4 front, I think investing in a rookie wouldn't have been the worst idea.

Read on SBA nation that McCoy was almost traded for picks but it fell through. Article also said he was being offered deals in the range of 8 million. The plus 10 million was apparently started by his agent who was trying to drive up the price

Above $1m can be enough to get a 7th. $3m+ per year and you might be in the 6th round range. I’d be shocked if he signed elsewhere and we didn’t (could be canceled out) get a 7th at worst. Depends on his play this year.

Also, declining the 5th year option has no impact, he’d still be an UFA lost.

The past couple of years 7th round comp picks bottomed out around $2.5 million.  That's the reason I said $3 million just to be on the safe side.  A million hasn't been enough for a comp pick in quite some time.  The reason I know this is on another site me and another dude debated the comp pick issue at length and I did a lot of digging to make my point.
