Torrey takes pay cut

Torrey you are my new favorite panther for the season and if we win the Superb Owl maybe all time!

He really didn’t do anything spectacular, he took guaranteed money vs the unknown. Anyone with common sense would’ve done the same thing

I prefer to think that Torry realized that with no guaranteed money he was the easy person to cut and really wanted to be on this team as he thinks we are primed for a Super Bowl and he wants part of it. He isn't the first aging veteran willing to take a team friendly deal to try and pursue a championship.  Unfortunately I don't think McCoy feels the same way

Smith has no where else to go and no one else would offer him $5m. Smith doesn’t have the luxury of pursing a championship and the Panthers aren’t a top 5 team in that category imo. McCoy has met with 5 teams? And could literally go anywhere he wants depending on what he wants to making so what they both ‘feel’ is entirely different based on their situations.

I would bet Smith was probably told something that implied it’s 0 or 3...

However, I think it does say a lot about him that he was willing to take the cut to help the team, as much as he can, and we aren’t all reading an article titled ‘Smith let go by Panthers due to unwillingness to take a cut’.

We’re all skeptical about Smith but we all know he’s a stand up dude. unfortunately as a fan I care more about on field performance.

The decision basically came down to this: $2 million > $0.  Torrey was never going to see that $5 million this season.   At least he's almost assured not to get cut now while still getting a decent salary and looks to even to have taken one for the team.   It's a win-win--win (obviously the team came out financially better too).

Heres my take:

Im very glad Torrey did what he did. But i dont think he had a choice, and I dont hold him on some sort of pedestal because of it.

What Charles Johnson did, hitting free agency, being offered more money, but resigning with us because he loved our team and city, thats whats up dude.

it doesnt take a super hero to choose between $0 and Gaurenteed $1m

Torrey is a stand up guy and has done many great things, but I dont count this one.

It also helped that the first time we gave CJ a contract he was overcompensated due to Hurney’s spending spree after the lockout and the fact he was in his hometown Atlanta probably hours away from signing with the Falcons.

But yea, the Panther rarely get players taking less to play here. Peppers was another good example who played very well considering his pay and age. You know he wanted to be here, home, a couple years before going off into the sunset.

I really can’t think of any other players who took a cut to stay here off the top of my head.

I’m not so sure I agree.  I think overall the Panthers .org is viewed pretty favorably under RR and the culture that it has. Many current and former players have said so.  However it is a business and should be treated as such by both the front office and the players.  I would never fault a player for not taking a hometown discount in order to set his family up for life.  Across the league hometown discounts are really a thing of the past.
