Same question could be asked about KK. Both are 3 techs. There isn't a giant learning curve going from 3-5.

This isn’t the old 2 gap 3-4 schemes. 3-4 in today’s world is still one gap penetrating DL.  Not much difference.  Both McCoy and KK would be fine 5 techs.

Funny how Hurney got dogged for giving out big contracts and folks now say sign McCoy at all costs. Hurney 2.0 won't overspend and as a result McCoy might walk. You can't have it both ways.

I dont pay him $11m though---I  give him a 2 or 3 years (tops) deal at about $8.5 m per.  We will see.

That narrative needs to stop, no one would be complaining if he wasn't costing 5m per, keep in mind Funchess got 10m guaranteed with incentives to hit 13m for one season, and he doesn't even have Torrey's track record of production. 

So even overpaid to some degree is a misrepresentation of his salary, by current standards it is very affordable.
