I certainly haven't anointed Kyle Allen as the QB2

I have seen some people here speak with a certain amount of surety that Kyle Allen should be Cam's backup. Me? I'm not buying it until I see it. And, sorry, a game against an unmotivated Saints defense in the last game of the season doesn't do it for me. I thought that Heinike looked similarly suspect  (but maybe a bit better due to his mobility when he had time to throw versus Atlanta). And then there is the somewhat Huddle-maligned  rookie who will probably only need to get up to speed to legitimately compete with the other two. So Allen gets no pass in my mind, and I just simply raise an eye when hearing people claim that he should be our QB2 based upon so little---almost nothing.

FWIW, it's still May, but I'd like to point out what was said in the Riot Report today in reference to Allen and the QB battle (which really should be of more attention and importance in the minds of fans in my estimation).

"Team drills began with an interception from Luke Kuechly – the first of two for the All-Pro linebacker off of Kyle Allen – and featured a fumble recovery from Andre Smith that would have gone for a touchdown had this been a real game. Smith thinks that the new look of the Panthers defense will be extremely helpful for Kuechly – Rivera said after practice he’s seen a lot of inside linebackers be extremely successful with a three-man front in front of them. It isn’t necessarily a surprise to see the defense holding strong against the Panthers’ three backup quarterbacks, but Taylor Heinicke continues to look – at least to me – the most polished of the three; it will be interesting to see where they are once training camp begins in August."

As far as I'm concerned, no one should be exclaiming Allen as the best choice to back up Cam so early in this process. He's going to have to win that honor, and it's basically a guess as to whether he can/will do it.

Don’t take it so personal... I think

we are all hoping for solid competition at the backup position. No one is being “anointed.”

also, we should celebrate that Luke can be all worldly not matter what formation we run, as opposed to attacking one of our backups for throwing a pick to the best MLB in the game....

I don’t think anyone has anointed Kyle Allen as QB2...but I’ll personally take one half of an actual NFL game against an “uninspired” Saints defense over the collective training camp QB performances with their untouchable red jerseys. Say what you want about the Saints’ effort in the finale, but a QB still needs to get the ball where it needs to be and Allen showed excellent accuracy and touch...including the first long TD pass I think I’ve seen from us in about 2 full seasons. He also showed great poise in the pocket. I think people are dismissing Allen’s performance because they think the Saints basically rolled over in that game, but everything in his control, he did very well.

I am not dismissing his work, what I am saying is that he hasn't done nearly enough. I can easily say that people are dismissing Heinicke's work, as well as being dismissive of Grier before he even gets a chance to compete. The competition will be won in August.

True...I don’t think anyone is advocating just handing Allen the #2 QB job. Between those people anointing Allen as the undisputed #2 QB and those saying all Allen did was beat up on a bunch of unmotivated backups (I.e. dismissing his performance), there are way more people in the latter group.

You also said Heinicke looked “similarly suspect”, insinuating that Allen did look suspect in his playing time...I’m not sure what you saw that was suspect out of him, other than perhaps his durability. Obviously there’s the legitimate argument that there’s too small of a sample size to be anointing Allen, but I’m not sure how you can think Heinicke showed more than Allen in their respective limited playing times. Heinicke looked pretty solid in his opening drive against Atlanta, then went downhill after that. Allen went 4-4 for 38 yards against Atlanta and was solid throughout the entire Saints game until his injury.

I’ve seen more people anointing Grier as the #2 QB over Allen simply because of his draft position. Regardless, I would say most reasonable people recognize that there’s a pretty wide open 3-way competition for backup QB.

Allen has the strongest arm of the backup quarterbacks, so it's pretty natural that the majority prefer him.

He was 3rd string for a reason.

It was good that they both got some live time.

I thought Heinike actually showed more leadership.

that being said, I'm thrilled the team is doing what it can to increase competition, and develop quarterbacks. It IS necessary.  Who becomes the main backup won't come down to fan favorite.  The pros know better.

What’re you talking about? According to the huddle no one tried to lose that game and each team played their heart outs until the end. It was our super bowl, a game to remember and cherish forever. We beat a playoff team!

Oh nooo, it’s the bitter “We should’ve tanked!!” crowd, resurfacing...one month after the draft. They’ll be sitting around the fireplace with their grandkids 40 years from now, shaking their fist at the sky about that time the genius Sean Payton strategically outwitted stupid Ron Rivera by telling his backups to deliberately throw the game against our backups. CHESS VS. CHECKERS!
