Could the Safety Answer already be on the roster?

Let's see him on special teams first. If you are a back up safety or linebacker and aren't working on special teams, you probably won't make it through final cuts of training camp, much less pushing for a starting spot.

At this point in the offseason I'm expecting the answer to be on the roster.  Even if we do pick someone up it will probably be for the back up spot.

Chances are we carry 4:

Starters - Reid and Gualden

Backups- Jones and ?

So who is most likely to fill that 4th spot?

What I would hope for is someone not on the current roster for starting FS and Gaulden backing him up.  A two-year deal and let Gaulden be a pupil one more year.  Then have said starting FS and Gaulden fight it out in 2020 for the starting role.  Just don't give the darn thing to him like they are seemingly content on doing this season. His competition for the spot is a joke.  What would be even more of a joke is if he can't win a rigged contest.

We don't always carry 5 safeties.  Some years we do and others we carry only 4.  That said, I think we carry an extra DB that can play either corner or safety like Luke Cole.  If the team gets cold feet about Gaulden if he's not meeting their expectations in camp and have to sign a FA, then we definitely carry 5 because they won't cut him, just move him to a reserve role.

Before the 2018 draft he was viewed as a 2nd/4th round prospect, was his combine numbers that bad??

I think he ran in the mid-4.6 range and was deemed just an average athlete. He put up stout numbers in college to be just a 'meh' safety though. You're correct , he should have been drafted even as a value pick in the 7th round.  The problem being he projects better to a strong safety.  That's cool because we need a backup SS, but obviously doesn't solve the Gaulden or bust mantra the staff seemingly has right now.
