REPORT: Panthers interested in Gerald McCoy

This is the NFL, the "Not For Long" league. It's always "time to win". But you don't build a consistent winner with knee jerk decisions or by signing aging vets to cap flexibility limiting contracts.

I'd love to have McCoy at the right price on the right contract, but with the Ravens and Browns both in hot pursuit I just doubt that it's in the cards.

I mean.  Sure.  But obviously some teams try harder in their "its time to win" window than others.  Look at the Saints that have been sacrificing future picks for immediate help.  And there is winning, and winning.  While everyone wants to win, not everyone thinks they are superbowl contenders right now, and that will effect their team building.  Some teams know they are year(s) off.  That is what I am referencing.

I just don't see McCoy as an inflated cap signing if the Ravens are in the picture.  The Browns could swamp both of us.  The Ravens have less room than the Panthers.  Obviously, I don't think McCoy is going to get some crazy 5 year fully gtd contract.  What I expect is a 3 year deal where he could, in theory, be released after 2.  I strongly believe McCoy has 2 good years in him.  If not 3.  Now throw in that, unless this year there are some serious improvements, I expect Butler and Poe to be gone or resigned much much cheaper.  Thats 15m and 2 DL gone.

So basing on the fact the Ravens are still in this, with only what..13m in cap space, I just don't see how this is going to come down to a huge contract signing, unless they have quite a few ways to jiggle around their available money.

You don't often see a team continue their "consistent winner" aspect through multiple QBs.  The teams that are labeled as consistent winners that you have to watch out for year after year have had incredible consistency in QB.  Cam Newton, whether we like it or not, is on the later half of his NFL career.  He isn't going to play to 40 like some of these guys.  So we really need to make sure our plans account for getting better sooner rather than later., imo.

After the #Ravens visited with Gerald McCoy, my understanding is the free agent defensive tackle is headed home to see his family. After catching up with some folks, the visit was described to me as "A+++." We'll see what that means when it's pen to paper time though.

I am not sure that Tepper is always in step with the Steelers way. If I remember correctly he was on the fire  Tomlin bandwagon last year. As a five percent owner he had little say. Now he has all the say.....

It blows my mind that a guy who wanted to fire Tomlin hung onto Rivera and Hurney. Tomlin has his flaws, but I'm not sure there's a team out there who would take Rivera > Tomlin as their head coach.

Not hard to understand at all. The general thinking is that Tomlin has lost the locker room and respect of the players by failing to discipline the players and set standards. Rivera clearly has the respect of all the players and they work hard for him.  There are a number of teams who would look at the Steelers mess and have nothing to do with it or Tomlin. Whereas Rivera is firmly in control of his team.

I don't think Tomlin is that great of a coach, I'd rather have Rivera honestly. Rivera actually had a huge part in building the Panthers run of success over the course of the last 8 seasons. Tomlin inherited a team built by Bill Cowher that won a Superbowl only 2 seasons before that was loaded with talent. Much like Jon Gruden won a Superbowl with Tony Dungy's defense, Tomlin won a Superbowl with a majority of Cowher's players. I honestly would say Rivera is a better coach than Mike Tomlin for the sheer fact he has had to earn everything he got in Carolina vs Tomlin walking onto a team loaded with talent.

The name of the game is winning. The Steelers have beem a very consistent winner under Tomlin winning 65% of their games, winning a Super Bowl and literally never having a losing season.

"Control" means nothing if you're not winning.

Last week, the Panthers did not have a visit set up with Gerald McCoy, a league source told the Observer at the time. They were one of several teams who expressed interest. Interest has not…
