Keto Diet

This is just my experience/how my body reacted and I likely didn’t do it right, but nevertheless be very careful as everyone’s body reacts differently.

Truth. There's no one size fits all approach, but the diet zealots will have none of that whether it's the vegans, ketos, paleos, whatever. It gets to the point of being a near religious like devotion for many.

I don't have to go full keto to melt fat away. I just have to restrict carbs. Honestly, if you restrict carbs and eat lean cuts of meat, you'll be shocked how much you have to eat to get up to 1800+ calories per day. That's a poo ton of brocolli, cauliflower, chicken breast, fish, etc. Like a nearly uncomfortable to eat amount of it.

I'm planning on starting keto myself.  I've tried to start a couple of times, but I always have difficulty with what to eat...especially lunch.

Does someone have a sample menu that has worked for you?  Everything online seems to either have a lot of things I am unlikely to eat (either because I don't like it, or don't have the time or know how to prepare it properly) or is pretty generic.  I just need a relatively easy real world way to start while figuring out what works for me.

I will say that I don't think of keto as a diet so much as a new way of eating.  Once I reach my target weight, I won't be strict keto, but will use it as a framework to continue eating well.

What I did was figure out what foods I like to eat. Fish, tacos, wings and then build around it. Once of my mainstays has been broccoli slaw with salami and pepperoni added in. Instead of dressing I use ranch dip. It's pretty filling compared to a salad for lunch. What I have found is I don't really eat lunch now, I do 2 or 3 snacks until dinner because I can't really eat a full meal during the day because of my job. I try to do something crunchy with something I can dip because I love crunchy food. Figure out your 10 main meals and then try to adapt off those in a keto friendly version. That will probably help more than anything.

Any particular pain points in your menu, or you just hate following a diet in general?

The restrictions pissed me off and I had no notable change in mood or energy.

Cutting out processed wheat and cow dairy has made a big difference for me. I switched to sprouted grains, legume based pastas and chips, and goat dairy. I was really surprised that I felt a difference. I don't get indigestion all day, I have more energy and less inflammation. I don't really eat any different than I did menu=wise, I've just changed the quality of the ingredients.

Wasn't for me either, that's why its never going to be a one size fits all approach.

For me it was just eliminating all processed foods, and using IF 16:8 & 18:6.

But I had to make some changes along the way, doing away with IF because as a professional cook it hampered my job ( can't serve something I haven't tasted)

For processed food I was missing out on life experiences with my kids so I would say theres about 10-15% wiggle room in the processed food in my diet now,  I'm not going to miss out a pizza with my 8yr or a corn dog at the beach etc etc, ( I'll just bang out some extra cardio the next day if it bothers me)

You will find what works for your biology and lifestyle.

How long did you try it? There’s an adaptation phase.

Also, since it’s for epilepsy you could try exogenous ketones and see how that works. Dr. Dom D’Augustino has done some research with the exogenous variety and has seen some positive results.

Just found this thread.

While I will say not all dietary lifestyles are right for all people, I am loving the keto diet.  Yes I have lost 20+lbs so far and my energy is through the roof for and old fart.

But the reason I am Liking it the most is from the anti inflammatory benefits I am getting from it.   I was a catcher for 20 years all through college.  And while I am only 46 it felt like my knees and hips were a 100 a couple months ago.  I have horrible varicose veins from squatting all though years and had terrible edema and swelling in my calves that was so frustrating. Couldn’t even walk around a zoo with my kids or mow the grass without having to come in and prop my legs up.  Compression socks helped but not a lot. And I hated them. I was very close to getting surgery on them

I now have started running again and can mow the grass or be on my feet all day with no problems.  To me it’s a godsend.  I feel like I got my life back.

It may not be right for everyone. But for me it’s not a diet.  It’s a lifestyle to manage the inflammatory components of my body.
