PFF: Most valuable RB in the NFL.

Recommended Posts

So many great RB's in the NFL right now.  Not sure what they mean by "de-valued" , that was more of a trend 5-6 years ago.

I have a love/hate with PFF but find myself more on the love side than the hate side the past two years.  They spend a lot of time on numbers and in the past I don't think they watched the tape enough with the big picture view, just wanted to spot touch points and measure yards instead of noting instincts and trends.

So I was impressed they noticed CMC has bulked up this year, he definitely has their attention.  Really like they mentioned Gordon.

Im kinda suprised they still had Kamara ranked above CMC last season.  But im glad they didnt just go off raw rushing or yfs and rank saquon above everyone.

They were totally right about Hunt,  KC missed him badly in that playoff game against the Pats.  That dumb ass incident he got into mightve cost the Cheifs a super bowl. As bad as their defense was,  if they had hunt they couldve just kept the foot on the gas the entire time and just outscored the pats

I think the position itself is de-valued from where it was 15+ years ago. I think that is more what they mean and there were a lot of factors that made that happen. There was a definitive switch to a more "by committee" approach to the position, the switch to much more heavily passing based offenses and the general short effective career span of the players at that position are some of the more notable ones. Still, if you have some of these more versatile RB's like they mention in the video, it does dramatically impact their value. Being able to get a guy that is a significant passing threat is a huge weapon and it expands the roles that they have. Kamara and CMC being the two excellent examples of that.

But, those guys are relatively rare. On average, the position itself has declined in value. You can see that every draft when you start to compare how many/where running backs are drafted and you can see that when you look at the salaries that NFL running backs have and where they compare to the 1980's, 1990's and early 2000's.

We are lucky enough to have gotten one of those versatile weapons in CMC, although myself and others were skeptical of the pick. I was not convinced we would utilize him to his full potential(lack of confidence in coaching), I was also unsure he was going to be able to consistently run inside in the NFL, and I was also looking at the NFL RB devaluation that had been occurring. Luckily, we were able to use him effectively and he has made dramatic improvements each offseason.
