Chernobyl (HBO) Mini- Series

They wrapped things up perfectly last night.  It was great to finally go back and see the events leading up to the catastrophe at the ground level (with the weight of all the future impacts already known). Top 10 short series for me, the quality is up there with some of the best stuff HBO has ever made (and that is pretty elite company).  I almost want more but 5 episodes is the perfect amount probably.

Finished it last night.  Wow was that well done.

I do feel that the more who watch it will be against nuclear power, and I feel it's the only way to go moving forward.

So many stupid mistakes compounded by greed, and being scared of a tyrannical government.

In my opinion, what was exceptionally well done was the dichotomy of the political class and the regular people of the USSR in how they approached their respective crises?

The regular people went above and beyond to sacrifice tremendously when needed for the good of their fellow man.  They generally ducked their heads to avoid contact with the political class, clapped dutifully when prompted and generally held them in contempt in private company (unless you were a miner).

The political class?  Their crisis was preventing the outside world from knowing their failings at the expense of everyone but themselves.  People would do well to understand just how much of this permeates how the political class regards anyone when it comes to human nature.  It seems to underpin how human civilizations naturally emerge with these common threads.

Sad that this series isn't getting more attention.  I could see something like this replaying in present-day China.

Don't kid yourself, it could happen in the US as well.  Human error happens to us as well.  Just watch the story of the Challenger disaster.

Most Americans think 3MI was our Chernobyl, so the lexicon is already violently skewed to "no clue".  The closest thing to Chernobyl happened in Japan and that's still miles from any comparison.

I watched the final episode last night. Exceptional.

It was written well enough that you didn't need to be an engineer to understand how it was explained. Yes, the animal shooting scenes were difficult, but they didn't show any of the animals actually being killed- you just knew what was happening.

Can you imagine actually conscripting 600,000 men to work clearing forests, plowing under land, burying crap....?

Jared Harris was great (last saw him in 'Mad Men'), Stellan Skarsgard was really good as well.
