ESPN predicts 7.7 wins and a less than 30% of making the playoffs

Remember in 2015 when we were projected to win 6 games and finish last in the Division and then went 15-1?

Remember how Cam had just led the team to the second round of the playoffs after getting in a car wreck and how he wasn't dealing with a serious shoulder injury back then? Panthers were trending up back then - the NFL took notice and had the Panthers in a good number of primetime games that 2015 season. Panthers are trending down right now. If Cam returns to the QB we all remember him to be, it will be a fun season. If Grier has to play it's going to be a rough season.

Panthers will be picking top 5 in 2020. This is what happens when you draft backup QBs with terrible mechanics in the 3rd round instead of filling out the numerous holes that you've had for years (cough cough FS). This is the equivalent of building Follys when your town has gaping potholes.

Are you making the assumption that Cam is not starting and Will Grier is? Or do you honestly believe that our hole at FS will cause us to be a 3-5 win team?

We have a huge question mark at the QB position with Cam's injury and don't expect anyone to be high on Carolina this year.  The good news is if Cam can stay healthy, this is a deep playoff team.

I predict 11.6 wins and a greater than 90% chance of making the playoffs.  I have the same amount of credibility as those projections.

You actually do. ESPN used to have a writer named Gregg Easterbrook, he did a yearly column about preseason predictions. Nobody got it right, ever. These predictions are as useful as draft grades on the Monday after the draft.

These predictions always give the events of the previous season too much weight. There are always multiple teams that weren't good the previous year that go to the playoffs the following year, and vice versa. If nothing else, the Panthers are proof of that historically, since we constantly go from bad season-good season-bad season-good season pretty consistently.

The TMQ! I always liked his column.

These pre-season predictions are always just something to pass the time in the offseason. Sells clicks, gets ratings, etc.

At this point that sounds about right.  Why would anyone predict more? This team disappoints more often than not and I’m sure no one has confidence Cam will be back at 100%.   I’m going with 8 wins until they prove me wrong.

ESPN is always better at showing what happened than predicting what will.

Our season will live or die based on Cam's shoulder. It really just comes down to that.

Well....when our defense was good Cam had no weapons and literally the worst football coordinator of all time. Now we have a real OC and all sorts of weapons but the defense has fallen apart/retired. Really have to hope they hit on those picks for the pass rush this year or our backend guys with potential will be hit up again.

Cam healthy and the guys contribute and 11-5 like 55 said IMO too.
