I know this sucks and all....

but would it make sense to mortgage our 2011 1st rounder, just to land a franchise quaterback, being we will have a new coach and all? the pieces are around us, folks. this team is not far off, imo. this season reminds me of fox's first season, the 7-9 season, where we had a real solid defense, then went on the next season to explode with a bad ass defense and solid running game, and took it all the way to the super bowl.

as crappy as our offense has been, it has been fun to watch this alleged "new scheme" come together, and finally see guys flying to the ball, and making solid hits and tackles. (being against shitty teams, but nonetheless)

if we can just get that #2 receiver, and big time qb in here, we might be on top, this time next year. any thoughts?

we pretty much have to trade Peppers. Only position of value that might be willing to part with, and can manage without. I am confortable with our rotation of DEs. plus we could bring in a couple of free agents with the cap space.

so we might not have to mortgage a future pick?(s)

it would suck if pep had a great season, and was like, "guys, i wanna re-sign here long term, sorry about all the bullshit." there would be no way we would trade him then. thus nothing to offer other teams, right? i just think sneaking back into the first and grabbing a nice quaterback would be different and exiting for a change, and help this team, immensly

My concern with the trade Peppers option is the next offseason might look just like the past one. He is going to press to not be franchised, then refuse to sign the tender making it impossible for the Panthers to negotiate a trade. So this will leave either the team trading future picks or as some think Smith or a RB to get back into the first round

I don't understand all the hoopla about geting a QB in the first round.

We still have an early second round pick, and this is a very deep QB class. There will be someone available. Does it matter that it isn't THE BEST QB in the draft? It's not like being the best QB in a given draft means they are the best pro (Alex Smith, Jamarcus Russel, David Carr, etc. etc. etc.) it just means that you paid a sh*tload more money for them. Can you imagine what a top 5 Qb would set us back on an uncapped year?

Do we really need a top 5 QB to succeed? It's a misnomer that you have to get a top 5 QB to be a winning ball club. Far from it. Seems to me that two of the three QBs leading undefeated teams right now weren't even first found picks (Kyle Orton-4th round, Drew Brees-2nd round) and the other is a once in a generation QB that we would only get if we had the number one overall pick, and I think we can all agree that we'd rather avoid that happening.

Stop spazzing out about "oh my gawdz, we'z dont'z has a furst round pick. We wont'z be able to grab this year's Akili Smith." We can draft a Qb in the second or third...f*ck it, the fifth or sixth round who could guide us to the promised land. We got the the Super Bowl with an undrafted QB, imagine what we can do with a drafted one, regardless of where they are picked.

Well taking a QB is never a guarantee to help.(in the first)

To me it would be worth it though, and I honestly won't/can't be mad if they pick up a QB and he turns out to be a bust.

In my eyes you have to try.

correct.

plus, a future first round pick does not share the same value as a current first round pick.

2011 first round = 2010 2nd round

This years 2nd round pick and next years first should get us back in the first round. I don't have a trade value chart so I don't know how high that would be....I'm guessing between picks 18-28. Is there a player that far down in the first found that would warrant 2 draft picks?

I think we should stop trading our picks.

If we trade Pep for example, to get back in the first, then so be it.

Depending on which Jr. QB's declare for the draft, there should still be a good QB left where we pick in the 2nd.

    • This is true. I think guys like TD, Luke, Jake, Gross, Trey Boston all have been positive and hopeful about Panther moves since they retired or left the team. They'll give their opinion about things but arent overly critical. Steve Smith has been critical but since becoming a media guy he's become more neutral, and since being part of the panthers media team (I think?) he's been more Pro-Panthers. Cam has been honest with his takes which I appreciate, and I think being PC in the media is something that won't suit him. Therefore, it makes sense why they'd prefer to not have him around media wise.
    • I think a healthy Derrick Brown solves alot of problems with this current lineup. Losing him was huge. Remember, he usually plays every defensive snap. BTW, I think they should pull back from that. A guy that big should really be at around 70-75% snaps at most.  If they can draft a contributing rookie pass rusher or defensive tackle, and then bring in an above average pass rushing vet, I think this defense takes off - with a healthy D. Brown. Oh and lock up Horn asap. The longer they wait, the more it'll cost. Secondary is good enough - starters and depth. Inside LBs need an upgrade and/or depth injection. They aren't that far off. Injuries have hurt them a ton.
    • Who mentioned Sanders or Ward?   You seem off your rocker about not drafting either QB.   I'm just telling you this franchise isn't going to win games until we find a franchise QB. Its really just a fact.
