2nd Year Talent -- Question Marks/Potential?

I'm seeing an opportunity being given to a few guys:

Rashaan Gaulden 3rd rounder (85th overall, 2018): We have a safety spot to sort out and he was our compensation for Benjamin.  I'd like to see him work out.

Marquis Haynes 4th rounder (136th Pick, 2018): Been mentioned a few times recently, he was dope in college; does he have legit potential and a role in our hybrid/3-4 looks?

Jermaine Carter 5th rounder (161st pick 2018) & Andre Smith 7th rounder (234th pick 2018): Do these guys maintain roles?  I actually really like both and Carter got some decent playing time last season. https://247sports.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/Article/Jermaine-Carter-earn-bigger-role-Panthers-2019-130589229/

Bottom Line:

This is a make it or brake it for Hurney's first draft since coming back.  He's hit high in the draft once again, do one of these later guys work out?  I'd like to see what Gaulden and Haynes can do.  I don't think Gaulden is a lost cause at S such as Elder or Seymour at CB.   I'd of course like to see competition brought in but want to gauge everyone's perceptions of these 2nd year guys not named Moore, Thomas or Donte Jackson.

Haynes definitely intrigues me with the 3-4 stuff. Gaulden looked pretty trashy last year. We'll see. I think it's smart to consider giving him a shot at the nickel position too. That was his primary position in college and you've already spent that 3rd rounder. Might as well try to get good use of it. I like Carter and Smith both as LB depth.

I'm most interested to see how Marquis Haynes performs in a 3-4 scheme. Always thought he was an odd pick last year given his scheme fit, but it makes a lot more sense if we had it in mind to possibly switch to a 3-4 in the near future.

Also, I think judging Gaulden by his play with relatively limited snaps as a rookie is premature. He was admittedly a bit of a project when we drafted him; it's entirely possible he can develop into at least a passable starter. That said, I'd still like for us to take a look at a free agent to play FS.

is there a reason you left out the first 2 picks? Feel like this would be a good thread to talk about the whole 2018 class.

Rashaan Gaulden- would be surprised if he did anything, but it’s possible solely bc we don’t have anyone else. Feel like it’s more likely he starts at nickel than FS

Marquis Haynes don’t see any reason to be excited about him. Didn’t do anything last year and wasn’t able to earn more PT despite zero pass rush. Now we add 2 guaranteed guys above him, more than likely 3 with miller, and people think this guy will contribute? I doubt it. 

Jermaine Carter- feel like he’s developing well for a backup LB role, could be ready to take over for the overhyped Shaq Thompson if we hopefully don’t over pay him next year

Left out the top bc they’re contributors and have heightened expectations. These guys were basically invisible and am curious to if they can make an impact.

The thing that worries me with Gaulden at Nickel is that the Combine suggests he is extremely unathletic. I don’t put a lot of weight into the Combine unless someone tests extremely well or extremely poorly, and Gaulden scored somewhere in the 2 percentile if I’m not mistaken?

The slot WRs, whom Gaulden would be covering as a Nickel, are generally much shiftier and more agile. He had success there in college I guess, but he’ll be playing against much better athletes in the NFL. I think you can get away with a lack of athleticism at the FS position more than you can at Nickel, since you’re generally sitting in a deep zone instead of having to run with and cover individual receivers.

This guy is a 3rd year guy but I’m expecting continued success from Harrison Butker. Looks like we drafted a good one.

Moore, Jackson, and Thomas there is of course the desire to see them build upon relatively successful rookie campaigns. Same with Carter Jr and Smith, who looked good in limited action.

Gaulden and Haynes I would like to see contribute more in the rotation. If Gaulden is indeed the answer at FS or Nickel, then going to definitely want to see him show out

I am looking for a step forward from Haynes after a year.  I’m not surprised at his playing time last year.  He didn’t fit the role of a 4-3 DE.  At 235 lbs teams would run all over him.  Hope he has put on soMe good weight and can thrive in 3-4. 

Hopefully Gualden can find a role.  We really need him.

Eh. We said the same about that guy who played with Myles garret and then was never heard from again. I don’t think the silence on Haynes combined with bringing in 3 more guys above him bode well for his chance to make the roster let a lone an impact.

Also very excited for Ian. I don’t think the Greg we knew and loved will ever be back so it’s great that he showed promise as a rookie 4th
