2020 DT free agent class is decent plus a semi decent DT draft class next year.

We can retool the position if need to next year?

Comsidering KK will be the only DT under contract beyond next year.  This is a good thing for us, as itll be a big need

It seems like half of the 2016 1st round guys arent getting their 5th year option

Butler

So far these are the others that are not having theirs picked up

Arizona- Nkemdiche

Settle- Ifedi

SF- Garnett

Paxton Lynch and Corey Coleman have already been cut multiple times

Pitt- Artie Burns

Minn- Laquan Treadwell

Wash- Josh Doctson

Jets- Darron Lee

Bills- Shaq Lawson

Saints- Eli Apple

Tenn- Jack Conklin (one of those top 10 OTs)

Picks 15-31(Butler drafted #30).  Only 6 of the guys are having theirs picked up.

I blame Gettledouche for this.

Hunter Henry hasn't exactly set the world afire either. He can't stay on the field.

Also hilarious that people on one hand criticize our board for drafting VB but praise that Henry was on the board.

Also what story am I crafting? The fact that KK was on an expiring deal? The fact that pressuring the QB is paramount in the NFL?

Whatever dude. We had loads of other needs and we picked a guy who would have been a part time player in the best of cases.   It was at best a luxury pick that we weren’t in place to make.

Gettleman just can’t contain himself with DTs. He took another one this year with the Giants.

Say what hat you want about the players we took this year but at least they were at 1) premium positions that are hard to sign in FA 2) clear positions of need

Look Gettleman has been AWFUL in NY, but the VB pick at the time made sense and the guy clearly has first round talent/measurables, just not a first round attitude.

I think his best position is 3-4 DE. It's a win-win for us at this point. VB balls out this year and gets a nice deal elsewhere? Great I'll take the comp pick. VB busts out and doesn't do poo this year? Great we can move on this offseason.

Gotta disagree with you on this one.

I realize that Gettleman was looking forward to the time that Starr and Kwan's contracts would be up. He knew he couldn't sign them both and was looking for a replacement at one of the DT positions going forward. No problem with that at all. My problem was with WHO he selected.

I don't think Vernon Butler had 10 sacks during his collegiate career. Nothing about that suggests he would have been able to replace Kwan's production at the 3 tech DT position if we had been unable to sign him to an extension. He also wasn't stout enough to play a 4-3 NT and tie up blockers like Starr.

During the 2016 training camp I remember a Panther official saying that VB would not be playing NT and would be used as 3tech DT like KS.  I scratched my head saying "he isn't a good pass rusher, and won't see the field as long as we have KS. If KS leaves he'll never generate that type of pass rush. He also isn't big/strong enough to replace Starr. He'll never be more than a backup unless he can play some DE (which we knew he couldn't in a 4-3 defense). If you have to make a decision on whether to keep a pass rushing DT over a space eating DT in today's pass happy NFL, the smart choice is to keep the pass rusher because they're harder to find. And, that's what the Panthers ultimately decided to do.

Last year was telling. We let Starr go and signed D. Poe even though we had a 1st round DT on the roster. I knew then that the Panther would be crazy to pick up his fifth year option.

Had G-Man picked a NT capable of replacing Starr's production, no one would have been upset with taking a NT with the 2016 pick. Unfortunately he didn't. We would have been better served trading back to pick up additional picks, which may have actually allowed us to come out of the draft with more than one decent player (Bradberry)

This is a classic example of re-directing an argument. I absolutely love our draft this year.....which has absolutely nothing to do with VB. In fact I'm on record somewhere on this board saying this might be our best draft class ever.

Back to VB, when you overdraft for need you fug yourself. That draft kinda blew ass as we can see now with how many first rounders aren't being tendered.

But the plan all along was him to play UT on rushing downs and have KK line up at DE where he had effectively rushed the passer all season the year prior. There was reason to believe that he was the heir apparent to KK anyway.

Plenty of guys are drafted based on projection/athletic potential that your coaches can coach up vs. having tons of production in college. And there are plenty of guys with tons of college production that never make an nfl roster.

Let's put it this way, everyone is complaining we drafted VB because we didn't "need" and UT. But if VB had lived up to his potential and we now had two defensive tackles capable of rushing the passer on 3rd down, people would be lauding Gettleman as a genius for getting us a deadly interior pass rush.

Again the draft is fuging crapshoot and even the best teams miss. Look at that first round that NCFAN posted, nearly half aren't being tendered.

And again, Gettleman has royally fuged up in NY and I have no idea what he is doing. But VB was not a bad selection, he just has been a bad player.

Maybe this will give him incentive to get off his ass this season.

Could be, but some guys just dont have that fight in them.

See, Funchess this past year in a contract year

Adding another one to this list

That draft class looks terrible after all the dust settled
