Drafts past. Playoffs for other sports going on so question. Are the Carolina Hurricanes more relevant in the Carolina's now than the Hornets?

Cool they win a title in the country 4th favorite sport.. That doesn't mean their more relevant or entrenched.. The Hornets built the Pro Sports market here.. Most of us grew up Hornets fans .. If the team was winning along with the entrenched memories it would rival the Panthers..

I agree if the Hornets had a team that made the playoffs year after year competing for titles it would be huge

But winning 41 games and getting  the 7 or 8 seed in the NBA doesn't produce that much excitment

a 7 game series "benefits" the better team regardless of sport. longer series means you can be more confident that the better team won, which i thought was the point?

Objectively speaking, yes.

Marketing wise, not necessarily.

There are two major sports whose league offices commonly generate complaints that certain teams are favored over others. The NBA is one  Major League Baseball is the other.

In baseball, the complaint is usually that the head office favors teams in larger markets. In basketball, the Association gets criticized for favoring the teams that have the most popular players.

How valid are those complaints? I don't have the authority to say, but I can say from listening to fans of both sports that those views are very widely held.

The Hornets would be successful if they knew how to manage contracts and actually draft. They’ve been in position numerous times over the last decade to draft franchise changing players and went elsewhere. When you give Nic Batum 100+ million, there’s a problem. They’ve meddled in the waters of mediocrity so much that often times they aren’t in position to make the playoffs or draft a high profile guy. But they’ve missed on literally every pick besides Kemba, when there are current all stars they had the opportunity to draft at the time.

Also, to be clear regarding the Hornets, based on what I've seen and read I don't believe their lack of past success has to do with the NBA favoring other teams so much as it does the people running the Hornets (up to and including Michael Jordan) not having a clue what they're doing.

i don't know if it's fair to exclude the nfl from that considering the fan reaction to the inconsistent way things like pick plays (certain pass happy offenses), headhunting (any defense going against cam newton) and dpi (e.g. legion of boom) were/are handled. not to mention the patriots.

I know some people say the league favors the Patriots, yet when you have things like Deflategate it's hard to say for sure.

And to be honest, I still believe the inconsistent referee issue is due more to incompetence than conspiracy.

The hornets are somewhat popular in Charlotte....not in North Carolina.

I know TONS of people that go see the Panthers and Canes, I know if exactly zero people that go to the Hornets games, much less watch them.

I'm in the Eastern part of the state.

I'm just across the border, and if you're going by gear and paraphernalia and all that, I see plenty of Panthers gear but not a whole lot of Hornets gear.

I see enough Panthers gear on a daily basis that whenever someone suggests no one in South Carolina supports them, it always makes me chuckle.

but as you reduce games that alleged separation of talent becomes more and more meaningless, which was one of the points of the statistical analysis provided. an nba with a 16 game season and 1 game playoffs would see a dramatic increase in variance. that's not up for debate.

The NBA vs NHL playoffs is a great way to illustrate the lack of parity. NHL has 7-game series but is more prone to "upsets" because that league isn't structured towards mega-teams. I believe a team set the regular season record in wins this year and they were swept first round of playoffs.

Imagine Golden State being swept round one the year they set the wins mark.

Well, there's a difference between the two sports. Hockey players rotate lines, in shifts. You need more guys to contribute. Ovechkin is great, but he can't play the full 60 minutes. Whereas Durant and Curry could play the whole game, if they wanted.

Also, there have been times when a goalie gets hot, and a team rides them all the way through the playoffs. There's no equivalent to that in the NBA.

The OG Hornets had huge fan support but that was also because we are a rabid basketball state(still are) and that was our first major professional franchise. The fact is, the Hornets/Bobcats have never even been to a conference final in 29 years of existence. The early years were great but the franchise has made just 3 playoff appearances in the last 15 seasons. That is going to sap the will out of a fanbase. Heck, in the three playoff appearances that we did make....we won a TOTAL of three games. The failure of the Hornets, and the likely continued future failure, will rest solely on it being a mismanaged franchise. It's hard to see the Hornets being relevant in the NBA in the future, although we all know that it just takes one great player to transform a franchise in the NBA.

The Hurricanes are without question the most successful professional franchise in North Carolina. Since 1997-1998 they have been to 3 conference finals and 2 Stanley cups, winning one title. And that is considering that in those 20 years(not including the lockout year or this season) they have only made the playoffs FIVE times. 15 of those 20 years we have not made the playoffs at all, including the drought of 9 straight seasons. But, even with such a drought, we are able to sell tickets for more than the New York Islanders in this second round series. The arena is arguably the loudest in the league. So, it is very clear that the Hurricanes can draw a fantastic crowd, and they received great support during our the early 2000's when we were making those deep playoff runs. Sure, we haven't been as consistent as the Panthers but at least they have won a title.

So, yes the Hurricanes are much more relevant because they have had real success. Moreso than even the Panthers. But, much like the Hurricanes, the Hornets can get a rabid following if they start winning. How many sports professional sports teams can boast that they have rabid fanbases or full stadiums/arenas with the kind of droughts that both the Hurricanes and Hornets have had? Hell....name one!

Canes making the playoffs caused more interest than Panthers making the sb in Raleigh. In terms of the triangle, Canes are the top dog pro sports team and I see like one hornets hat a year up here.

Yeah, I will back that up. In Raleigh, the Hurricanes are king for whatever reason.

The Hornets haven't been worth anything since LJ and Zo left. And yes, the Canes are more relevant. But that is in a state where Duke and UNC basketball trumps both teams with ease and can even make a run at the Panthers. So saying the Canes are more talk than the Hornets isn't saying much at all.
