Drafts past. Playoffs for other sports going on so question. Are the Carolina Hurricanes more relevant in the Carolina's now than the Hornets?

Fwiw, Duke and Carolina are far more popular than either the Hurricanes or the Hornets.  This is still a college sports state.  The Panthers do fairly well, because the NFL is the most popular sports organization, but the other two pale in comparison to the big college teams.

Yeah, and honestly Panthers support is far, far, far, far behind college basketball support in this state. It is unlikely that is ever going to change.

College football is big in Charlotte as well...and it’s not state or unc

clemson and South Carolina both have huge football fan presence in CLT

State has football fans, UNC has never had football fans. ECU has more football fans than UNC, Duke or Wake Forest inside the state. Even with that being the case, if one of the in state college football teams were to become a national level power(Alabama, Michigan, Ohio St., Notre Dame, etc), then I don't think it would take much effort to be able to eclipse all the professional sports franchises in the state.

The fact is, we are still one of those traditional, Southern college sports states. It doesn't make it bad or good, it just is what is it is. That also doesn't preclude a Southern state from becoming a pro sports area or supporting professional franchises. It just takes time to build that level of loyalty, even in a sport that the state may be inclined to support anyway.

The hope is that in the future you are just as likely to see Panthers, Hurricanes or Hornets gear as you are Duke, UNC or NC State gear. But, that is still a long ways off and it takes things like the Panthers being in Super Bowls and the Hurricanes winning Stanley Cups for that to happen.

This. I love the Braves, but I see way more Red Sox and Yankees stuff.

Lots of Yankee and Red Sox fans in charlotte and raleigh suburbs (lots of transplants), but you guy outside of those areas, and the majority of baseball fans are fans of the Braves.

LMAO. The Braves don't even have fans in Atlanta, much less Charlotte.

Why you act like you know everything is a mystery.. There are alot of Braves fans here the Piedmont and thru out SC.  Sorry you don't know this.

I wouldn't care, regardless, because baseball is a less athletic version of golf. I definitely don't see any Braves gear though. Hell, I cannot even recall the last time I saw Braves gear outside of Georgia.

In the 90's and early 2000's? Braves gear and fans everywhere. Seems like they have made massive retraction now that the Braves are largely irrelevant. Same thing that has happened to the Hornets.

For years, I've had Charlotte residents try to convince me how the Hurricanes were irrelevant and more people show up to Hornets games. The Hurricanes have been to 3 ECF's, two Stanley Cups, and won a Stanley Cup.

While the the Hornets have only been to the Second Round of the Playoffs.

I think it's time to put the Hornets are more relevant than the Hurricanes to rest at this point.

You don't see these types of crowds at Hornets games:

The Hornets would absolutely have those crowds and more if they were in the playoffs. Meanwhile when the Canes were languishing the last 9 years without a playoff team nobody cared and it showed.

Its all about winning

In the last game of the season the Hornets hosted the equivalent of a home playoff game (not to mention possibly Kemba's last game) and the place was barely half full.  It was a pitiful turnout.  In all honesty, the lack of turnout sends an alarming signal about the fan base completely abandoning this franchise.  Not sure if you all have noticed but the team's most visible and vocal cheerleader (Pete Guelli) just quit to go work for the New York Football Giants.

I was there the last time the Hornets were in the playoffs (2016 against the Heat) and Charlotte was buzzing and the arena was jam packed. Almost playoffs /= playoffs. Get in the playoffs, and the Hornets will fill the stadium easy.

Every NHL fan is talking about how nuts the Canes atmosphere is. But here you are, making it seem like the Hornets have a great atmosphere. YAWN!

Two years ago, every NHL fan was talking about how the Canes were dead last in attendance, and on their way to Quebec.

See what winning does?

Jesus Christ this is so stupid. This team was like this in the Playoffs always. Including in 2006. Just stop. Charlotte's atmosphere in 2016 was garbage compared to the Canes. Just stop while you guys are behind please.

You said Charlotte is what people know and come to see, then back it up with a banking and population center?

I can guarantee you that when folks from Ohio or New York or Connecticut or California think about North Carolina it's most certainly not a bland nouveau city....it would likely be the triangle referencing college basketball, the mountains of NC, or the beaches of NC.

Now do more people travel through Charlotte?  Sure, it's a major airline hub, do people decide to go spend their week vacation in Charlotte?  Nah.

Really??
