Offseason and Draft Assessment

Then maybe we shouldn’t be paying our 5th WR 5M.

Or our PK 4M

Or a useless DT.9M

or one of those weak LBs 9M

As I understand it the DT is a 9m deadcap hit.  He can't be gotten rid of.

We are already thin at LB with experience.  Who exactly are we targeting to replace Shaq in the 9m range (or less)? Some you can confidently say will come in and play better?

Then maybe he shouldn’t have been signed in the first place.

And any draft pick could provide what Shaq does. For 8M less. What has Shaq done in his career that can’t be easily replaced?

At this point can’t even be mad about the neglect for fs, that’s solely on Ron. 2 regimes and still the same neglect.

The epitome of Ron Rivera, stubbornness.

still I’m happy about the draft, fs isn’t doom or gloom just yet, most people not happy about the draft get infatuated with there favor prospects for the team and get bummed when we don’t choose them. It happens, just remember this is just a hobby

Name a FS on our team.

A few more comments:

Watch Barnes, NT from Ga Tech.  Ross could be something, but he is 29.

Little will struggle a bit early, especially if they start him as a rookie.  help him out and get rid of the ball quickly. Do not overreact when that happens--he needs time, like everyone else.  I think it was a necessary pick.  Give Daley a year and he might be the LG in 2020.

The LG issue is still unresolved.  Surprised nobody is talking about that.  With a rookie LT, that is a big deal.  I want Moton at RT, but I just know they will put him at LG for a season because Williams is so one-dimensional.

Got it.  So Hurney should have done better *THIS OFF SEASON* by going back in time and not signing a guy that..at the time..was a good deal.

Ok.  So what draft pick do we lose to replace Shaq?  Little in the second round?

Interesting to see that a requirement for Hurney having a good off season is inventing time travel.

They’re bums with the exception of Gaulden who’s a unknown, still have some fa options and potential cuts upcoming

Gaulden is likely a bum too. IMO, they plan on starting Searcy. For some reason he is still on the roster, so that makes me think he is our guy. I suspect we might see Gaulden at nickel where he will be getting toasted.

I honestly believe both Rivera and Hurney think we are just fine at FS.

If we start Little at LT, you can bank on Cam's shoulder getting obliterated again. He is not even close to being ready to start in the NFL. He is a project guy.

I do agree on LG, however. We loaded up at OT but didn't address LG. I think we could easily have upgraded from Van Roten and in doing so, made Van Roten a valuable backup.

I don’t know why but people keep ignoring CB and just go with FS. Captain killed us way more than Adams/Reid did last year. When a team needed a 3rd down make they just looked to whoever he was covering. Some people actually think Gaulden will improve, but I wasn’t sold on him before last year and he had 0 flash. We still need to plug two holes in the secondary.

I liked the offseason before the draft and I love Miller and Burns and I’m actually Ok with Grier because we certainly think he can be a solid QB. As tough as the do you pay Cam $35M per year decision will be, we can’t make it without a viable alternative.

My biggest worry is that people have too much faith in Little and we gave up so much draft capital. Let’s be honest. No other team had a first round grade on him. We thought about taking him at 16 and he was still sitting there at 37. If he was truly the only LT in the draft after Williams and he was a great one, he’d never last.

Little is not Jordan Gross and I’m worried he’s not going to be good based on his terrible footwork and non-fluidity in the OL drills (not measurements, the actual drills) at the combine. I’m hopeful because if he’s not good, that pretty much tanked what should have been the third straight solid draft. This isn’t like my dislike of the Gaulden and Haynes picks last year (hopeful with Haynes on switch to 3-4) or the failure of Hall two years ago because we had 3 solid players in each with some role players as well. If Little doesn’t hit, this draft will have so much less impact on the next two seasons than a draft with 5 top 115 picks should have had.

Little is the lynch pin and here’s to hoping he’s good. One other worry I have is that we didn’t address DT/3-4 DE at all. Not a big deal this year but we have 0 players for 2020 unless everyone thinks Short and Poe are worth $31M in 2020 cap. I hate that we ignored that in the deepest draft for that in a long time. I can almost guarantee we’ll be double dipping their next year and who knows if there’s good depth.

I didn’t think this draft was very deep for Nose or 5tech. Lawrence could be a great nose. I feel that Oliver and Wilkins were more natural at the under spot in a 4-3, that’s where most of the DT talent was in this draft. Hell Gerald Willis didn’t even get drafted and he had more TFL than both. Dre’mont Jones and Charles Omenihu were really the two that I thought had the most potential for the 5 in this draft.

As far as Little and draft capital. The trade was the right move. Our evaluations felt he could be a starter at LT and there was a tackle run right after. If you dislike losing 77 instead of 100, I challenge you to look at picks 77-100 and you will quickly see dogshit and realize we would’ve drafted Grier at 77 anyway.

When was Poe ever a good deal. And now his contract is making 2.5M more of his salary guaranteed, so we can’t even June 1 cut him. But 2.0 is a genius.

Maybe either pick we wasted on Little. Or the pick we threw away on a backup. How hardIs it to find a coverage LB that struggles in coverage? Voshean Joseph lasted to the 5th. Not that hard.

Anything else?

i can’t criticize the efforts made to improve the pass rush and the front 7. but other than that, there hasn’t been much turnover, and we’re inheriting a lot of the same personnel from last year’s 7-9 team.

little is not a terrible prospect, not nearly as bad as picking amini in that same neighborhood, but we basically invested two picks in the guy.

and zero effort has been made to bring in a FS, as well as strengthening nickel. i think that’s a huge oversight and it’s going to bite us in the ass.

idk how grier is going to work out if he needs to sub in for newton. he’s either going to sink or float. is it worth using a pick that could’ve been made on a safety?

ron and marty didn’t rly pull out all the stops here, which is pretty much how they approached offseasons before. they’re banking on the shift in defensive formation to make it work this year. while i’m pleased that we’re finally making the shift to 3-4, there are too many high powered offenses that are going to tear into the holes that we’re leaving unfilled.

Got it.  So bringing up Poe as something Hurney did wrong *this off season* was a pointless remark.  Thanks for clearing that up.

Little for Joseph?  Man.  We definitely need a back up QB if we are doing that.
