So the question now is..

The Question

Will you be confident in our coverage IF we can sign Berry as a stop gap and depend on Bradbury and Jackson to make another step forward and become an elite duo? I personally would be fine with this and think we can be top tier IF we make that signing. Do you consider this draft a flop because of the lack of a safety pick? Me thinks people are over reacting.

And all stay healthy.

Of course this is always a factor but it’s nothing Colin Jones isn’t used to. I know he sucks but he has starts. Maybe they see something in Gaulden that we don’t as hard as that is to even say after watching him last year.

People need to realize the secondary also suffered do to a consistent lack of pressure, could we use a talent upgrade on the back end sure, but at the same time if we consistently apply pressure up front and don't allow time for the chunk plays that killed the absence of a new safety is minimized.

We did invest a 3rd (Gaulden) last season and while he may get looks inside, he's sure to receive opportunities at safety. I wouldn't have drafted a safety over Little in the 2nd, and at 100 which is basically a 4th were we really expecting to get a starter or just a forum favorite at that point.

There are still FA's available in FA and after cuts, the picks we made were much more important if I'm not being selfish and wanted the safety for the sake of it. I do think we'd have missed out on Little at 47, and I do think if we'd kept our pick we would have probably added a safety with the high 3rd.

However the OL, and pass rush trump safety so I can accept that.

If we're able to get constant pressure it'll help make our safeties and DBs in general look better than they are. If the QB never has a clean pocket to throw, his passes will be rushed and not entirely accurate, thus a bad secondary can end up looking decent or actually good. It's how Mike Mitchell thrived for us that one year.  This draft helped definitely we ended up getting two guys who can get to the QB. Burns was one of the top guys at pressures and Miller is another guy who can wreak havok. Best case scenario we sign another veteran capable guy, but if we can get to the QB I think the safety position might surprisingly look ok this season.

Berry has played 3 games the previous 2 years. Just no.

This. I love Berry because he’s been a great player with a great story and a great leader/person, but if he can’t stay on the field then none of that really matters. He’d make very little sense to sign at this point.

Good grief, on not drafting a fkn safety.

Reid is the best safety we have had since Minter. And we have had good/great defenses in previous years with JAGs back there. 1st priority was to fix what changed over those last defenses; stock up on guys that get to the QB. Last year not only could we not get home vs the QB, he had time to read D and go thru progressions. Take away his time and his space and the secondary will look better.

Boston, Mitchell, Addae, Berry all still unsigned.

I really dont want to put my hopes in an injured vet to save the day.  We cant have Pro Bowlers at every position and we obviously dont value the FS position in our D.

just find a competent FS that isn't Colin Jones, and that should be sufficient.  A JAG.  somebody whose name you rarely hear unless its to make a solid play.
