What are your grades for rounds 1-3?

1 Burns - My primary worry is about his ability to retain and maintain his recently added weight. Also, I admit to being intrigued about Sweat's speed weight combination. Thus, there is the opportunity lost. However, the bottom line is that the Panthers filled a need without reaching. I will be very interested to see the change in defensive focus this preseason. Grade - A-

2 Little - Unlike many first impressions on this board, I love this pick. I never thought that I would say that trading a pick to move up did not bother me. However, it did not bother me in this instance. That is how much I am intrigued by the firm possibility that the Panthers finally have a LT. It is very possible that the Panthers have managed to turn a weakness into a strength this offseason. That is not easy to do. Grade - A

3 Grier - My only hesitation regarding this pick relates to the analysis of Grier's downfield arm strength. I will keep an open mind. I am going to be very interested to see how Cam reacts to this use of draft capital, which is not to say it was not a smart move. It was time to invest more significant draft capital in the QB position. Grade - B+

I like Burns, I think with the right SxC coach he can be a Von Miller type force for us. A-

Dont like the Little pick right now, could change my mind if he becomes a legit starter. Dude is slow, struggles to pull and gets abused in the run game.  C-

Again I’m not a big fan of this pick right now. We could’ve easily filled a gaping hole but instead took a qb who may or may not ever start for us.

And as we all know the first time Cam throws an interception or holds the ball too long( one of the many flaws Grier has) everyone will be screaming for the local kid.

Right now I have to give Hurney an overall grade of C with possible room to get better

So what do you give the Panthers for rounds 1-3?

Way I see it

Burns - A

I have to believe his skill set is exactly what Rivera needs in the new defensive scheme.

Little - B-

A true left tackle, hard to be upset about this pick. It concerns me a little that Hurney is the only GM that apparently thought the guy was worth a mid first round pick. Ruh Roh.

Grier - A

Most of the QBs that are taken in the mid rounds and actually make it have plenty of intangibles. The guys with the perfect physiques and metrics go first. The scrappers with physical flaws go later. I like pulling for scrappers. I hope he becomes the best backup QB in Panthers history, possibly some day landing us a first rounder in trade.

If everything Hurney darfts in the 1st is money, then Little is 2nd round gold.

Burns is an A+. His speed, his explosiveness, his fluid movement is 2nd to his sexy bend. Put him through a NFL strength program and watch him become a monster.

Little is an A. If Hurney had him as a 1st rounder than it must be for that side kick pass protection that negates speed rushers. Little's side kick is prob best in this draft and Cam needs a blindspot protector that can negate those nasty speed rushers.

Grier is a B. After overreacting to this pick last night, I see that we do need a dependable backup and one we can mold. Grier has the ability to be a potential starter and that is what you need from a backup.

I must admit, my opinions have been changed after reading through the many many opinions of the talent experts on this site..

Burns: A.  No explanation needed

Little: F - - - . I learned today that we grossly overpaid in trade capital (because apparently Seattle was going to give their asset to us for no premium).. I’ve also learned from the experts that Little couldn’t play dead in a cowboy movie. Damn shame too as we apparently passed on the next Anthony Munoz and Jonathan Ogden to take this Byron Bell clone.

Grier: F - - - -.  Another teaching moment for me courtesy of the Huddle Talent Evaluation Committee™️.  I’ve clearly been wrong in the thought of drafting a capable backup that may turn into a Jimmy G type trade asset.. or God forbid, having a backup that if pressed into play might give you something..

Through day 2 the overall grade if a D- . The entire staff failed us and Marty should be euthanized.

Round 1 - B

Round 2 - B+

Round 3 - D

I think we picked up a position of need in rounds 1 and 2 so Im very happy about that.

Round 3.... I never wanted to draft a back up QB. I would rather have picked up a FA and if Cam's arm dies this year draft a guy high next year.

The Panthers got the 3 guys they wanted and I’m sure RR and Hurney think this is an A+++. It is rare to get all three of the guys you wanted in the first three rounds.

We have one of the best Oline coaches in the game and Ron is a defensive specialist so I’m not questioning the first two picks. The Grier pick was insurance that costs very little. I know the Huddle thinks the third round is filled with hall of famers....

Burns A-.   Overall I love the Burns pick.  We need to get to the QB and his bend is freaky for a guy that size.  I think he has the highest ceiling potential of any of the Edge rushers in the draft.  But he also has the lowest floor of the guys in the first round.

Little C+. Maybe I was blinded by my want for Moton to take the LT spot.  It would have opened up this draft to be a great one.  That obviously wasn’t the case and I can understand us going up to get him.  And while people are complaining about what we have up (including me) if we didn’t see Moton as a LT we had no choice.  Just hoping for some Matsko magic.  And what the heck.  He’s not Dillard.

Grier B-.  I get it.   With Cam having 2 surgeries in several years we need a decent backup.  And I trust Norv’s evaluation ability.   And at least we didn’t go get him in the second.  Hopefully he can turn into a decent backup

My overall issue with this draft is that we are having to draft for need. Not BPA.  The Burns pick was good.  But then having to get rid of our first 3rd rd pick because of a failed Gettleman 50 mill brother experiment pisses me off.  And then having to get a backup QBs with so many other needs is not ideal. But we had no choice.  I get it.

But we still have 3 picks left.  For the love of all that’s holy can we please go get a possible starting FS (Gardner/Thompson) at 115???

Oh and if they draft another ILB I will probably kick my dog.

Burns- B+ :Look, the writing was on the wall, this was the guy. We had our choice between him and Sweat. High character guy, motivated guy, fast, flexible, just what the doctor ordered.

Little- A+ :Y’all have been begging for this for years now. Hurney trades up in 2 to get our guy right before the tackles are picked clean behind us. I don’t give a poo that we lost 77 instead of 100. We probably pick Will Grier anyway. Really, who went between those picks that y’all would want?  Jaylon Ferguson? Winovich? Looks like a damn one leg Clay Mathews, get real THIS MOVE WAS fuging AMAZING!!!!!!

Grier- A: So outside of Murray, this is the best QB in the draft. I love accuracy of the deep ball and Grier is pinpoint there. People are forgetting that he lead a shitshow of a Gator team into the top 10(on PED but still) and had his Mountaineers in contention for conference both years there. As referenced above, this would have been 77 or 100.

The best backup QB, huh? O.K. ***tongue-in-cheek***

I wouldn't give a poo if he becomes the best---no qualification!

Mind you, I wouldn't mind if Cam stays the best either, but time is passing by, and I don't have time for sentimentalism.

Oh yeah...Triple A! Hurney may have gotten lucky by being pushed out of his own way by fate, but he gets As nevertheless.

Little definitely concerns me because of the inconsistencies but he certainly has the potential to be our first true long term high level LT since Gross. Think that pick is closer to a B. I like the other two a lot

i think that was honestly one of hurney's more solid first three rounds. everything addressed a need. There's a theory that you really just want more picks because no one knows who will develop and who won't, but they got grier at a good spot so in my mind that takes the edge off trading another third.

i like to think you take the biggest strongest motherfugers and let them be coached, so im fine with taking little.

i dunno i think it was pretty solid. Even in 2007, even though beason and kalil turned out to be incredible, neither of them were drafted for their eventual position. Kalil was drafted to play guard, and Beason OLB.

addressed needs, no crazy trade ups, everyone is big enough to play their position, no ridiculous developmental players; good job hurn dog

    • Meh. He played well on the special teams units but despite safety becoming a dire position we needed a warm body at, he was a complete non-factor on defense to justify keeping him around. He averaged 10.2 defensive snaps per game across 12 games last year and couldn't overtake Howden or Abram for the position (both of whom were brought back this year). Maybe he'll play better at CB for y'all but I wouldn't hold out much hope. As mid of a head coach Allen may be, he knows his stuff regarding the secondary so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on it.
    • couple more things re: extreme hots and colds and the EV use tax. In the winter months, I can confirm that the range isn't as far, but it has never given me range anxiety except the first time I made a trip to Myrtle Beach and wasn't accounting for it. I just had to detour and use a Supercharger for 5 min and the rest of the trip was no issue. Summer months have never been an issue at all.  NC has a $140.25 EV Registration fee every year, which amounts to the gas/use tax for ICE.
    • Just seeing this thread, and after browsing, I figured I would drop in and add my 2 cents. I hope this answers some of the questions or misconceptions that I have noticed.   I have owned a 2021 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus since Dec 2020, and love it. Absolute best car I have ever personally owned.  Current daily driver of 100 miles round trip to work and back.  Level 2 Charger at home in Garage.   The battery in my car was still designed to charge to ~80% for daily usage, only going above for trips etc preferably. The current batteries they recommend to charge to 100%.   1st year was in an apartment, 40 miles round trip at that point. Would highly depend on public level 2 charger at the library near me, and would also use 110v at work occasionally on weekends. Supercharger for travel. It wasn’t the most optimal, but I made it work. No maintenance in this year outside of tire rotations.   Years 2+, I am now driving 100 miles round trip to work. Level 2 charger in my garage.  I get home from work at ~25% charge, and charge back to my daily 80% in ~3.5hrs. On 110v, you can expect that will be over 24hrs. So for daily driver usage you will want a level 2 charger. For piddling around town, 110v will probably be fine. I had a part fail that was covered under warranty, and tire replacement/rotations for maintenance.     Tires: I have 99k+ miles on my car currently. I will put my 2nd set of tires on it at ~110k.   When I have had people ask me how I like my car, I always show them these 2 pages from the Tesla app. The numbers there are based on what I pay for kWh ($0.11) vs est cost of gas in NC at $3.93 per gallon. People who are concerned about the higher cost vs ICE probably don’t figure in the gas savings, or time/cost getting oil changes etc.  My car payment isn’t that much higher than any other car I’ve owned (shrug).   I know this is personal, and I don’t like the guy either, but I would not let Musk keep me from owning the brand. Thats like Henry Ford keeping you from owning Ford for, well….   Tesla currently have the best charging infrastructure for travel. Longest trip I have made is to Williamsburg VA from Triangle region. No issues getting there, no range anxiety etc. Sure stops can take longer for charging etc, but they are mostly setup at restaurants, gas stations etc for breaks, but ideally you’re not charging back to full at a stop. The best way to travel is to charge enough for you to get to the next stop. It’s faster at the batteries get juice faster when they are lower.  I have never seen another brand using Tesla superchargers tho I have heard it’s coming. But I have seen assholes pull their boats horizontally in charging stations 😉   If you are curious about how an EV would play into travel, check out https://abetterrouteplanner.com . Put in any EV you want, it will show you the path, time and time per charge etc. Great tool.
