Carolina Panthers select QB Will Grier in Round 3

I have been saying all pre draft that this is clearly a "save my job" pick. Rivera and Hurney are focused on making the playoffs next year and not necessarily improving the team for long term success. A playoff birth probably keeps them around, if Cam goes down Grier is just insurance to say " hey we tried to be prepared this time, we were trying our hardest to win!" When tanking for a top QB would be best at that point.

Even if the season goes south and cam is done Grier is still not gonna be the QB of the future. Cardinals just took a QB in the top 10 back to back years, why the fug should we even think about banking on Grier?

Bill is a fuging legitimate genius though.

It is true that if Rivera was anything but an incompetent boob and if Hurney was anything other than an abject failure in his first tenure here ALL of this would be thought of differently.

Also can people PLEASE STFU about some of the details of this.

Bill Belichick drafted Ryan fuging Mallett in the 3rd Round of the draft while having Tom Brady in the prime of his career.

And what did Ryan Mallet did in the NFL?

Now think about that and add in the Pats won how many superbowls by that time. The amount of success to that point

Now compare that to the Panthers. A franchise still chasing its 1st ring

Yeah because all 3rd rounders start coming out of draft. Can't remember if that's ever happen. Man we have some real smart people on this site.

A FS 3rd round pick may not start out of the gate but he damn well would contribute on special teams immediately and push the current guys in the FS rotation. By week 4-5? Good chance he’s seeing the field in certain packages if they are able to scout even the slightest bit. You’re really prepared to ride into the season with the likes of Searcy and Colin Jones playing center field with Brees, Ryan, Julio and Michael Thomas in this division?

The best thing about this pick is that if Cam is healthy he will play the best football he ever has in his career.

Cam could use a challenge. Maybe not a real threat to his job but a challenge would be good for him.

Guaranteed, this guy will not have any impact on Cam. Cam has been compared to much, much, much better prospects and shown he's legitimate time and again while the freshest "franchise" quarterbacks fell to pieces.

Well this means Grier is going to be a great QB because a lot of you are usually dead wrong on our picks, whether you like them or not.... a lot of you loved Daeshon Hall, hated CMC pick, loved Butler, hated Daryl Williams pick, and so on and so on. Don’t pretend you know any more than the Panthers scouts and coaches, the draft is 100% a crapshoot and you just hope to get lucky

No it wouldn't and not it isn't.

That's  1 pick per year rofl.

Actually it would, most teams miss on the majority of picks after the first two rounds. Draft success rate for first rounders is only 50% over the last 15-20 years. 2nd round is around 30% and after that it plummets to 12% in round 3 and under 10% the rest of the way.  If you look at his overall draft record, he's close to the top and that's counting the awful drafts he had in 2009 and 2010. 7+ probowlers during his first stint.

Guys pick #100 is not really a 3rd, the 3rd round ends at 96, we basically took Grier at the top of the 4th as the comps are added after the traditional end of the designated round. Most guys here with decent rationale were good with Grier as long as it was at 100 or later, and if we liked Grier & with NE right after us this was the place to pull the trigger.

Good teams have drafted backups in the 2nd, 3rd, and later even with other holes to fill -- look at Pittsburgh (Landry, Hobbs, Rudolph) of that trio if memory serves Hobbs, was a 5th, while the other two were both 3rd round selections.

There are still good safety prospects available, we have the 13th pick tomorrow, and then 154 & 187. We have the ammo to move up if needed to target a safety if that is the plan, and there are still FA options available if needed.

Ha, WTF...no it  was a  3rd rounder.  You dont get to renumber it

Helps the Saints had their backups in as well and gave zero effort, which in turn helped Allen look good.

That wasn't true from what I saw. It got nasty at times. I didn't see Saints players rolling over. You should know we don't like them and they don't like us. A heated division rivalry between the cream of the division.  Norv has done a great job as OC adapting and being creative. Surprisingly so after the Vikings.
