17 sacks is a project? Lol. Davenport is a project. We got ourselves a better pure pass rusher then Davenport and we didn't have to trade a first for him.

17 sacks is not the issue.  His size is the issue.  Until he proves he can gain mass, not lose his burst AND shore up his run d, he is potential with pass rush skills.  Thats it.

Yeah I'm lukewarm on the pick. I sort of feel like it didnt matter how the board fell...Hurney was locked in no matter on Burns no matter who dropped.

I feel like this is the Everette Brown pick all over again.

Yea but does he have a spin move...

Very few who are complaining are doing so *IF* our base defense is a 3-4.

Von Miller would have the same SEVERE drawback if he was tasked to play DE in a 4-3.

So will we be playing 3-4 as our base defense (i.e. more than 80% of the time)?

Or will Burns be tasked to play out of position and severely undersized in a base 4-3 with a sprinkling of 3-4?

And if we’re moving to a base 3-4, where are all those 300+ lb 3-4 DEs we’re gonna need? KK Short would be one.... who else?

And, again, if we’re moving to a base 3-4, what is gonna be done with all of our 270-280 lb 4-3 DEs?  Play them undersized and out of position at 3-4 DE? Or transition them to 3-4 OLB which most will have neither the nimbleness or speed to play?

I love that the only real question around this guy is whether he can put on some mass, and he's already proven he can add without sacrificing speed. And Tepper's expanding the players' cafeteria? Get him a couple of bo boxes with some sweet tea and we're golden. Have we ever had a player struggle to put weight on down here?

He can put on even more weight just like CMC when people said CMC was too small....

He doesnt need to if we play a base 3-4.

If we’re staying with a 4-3, what is going to happen to his speed and moves if he puts on 25+ lbs? If memory serves, CMC only gained around 10?

They are probably influenced by Mario Addison of all people. He came into the league UDFA even smaller than Burns but Burns has first round talent to go with it. Seems the team is keeping it somewhat tight on the 3-4/4-3 and I don't imagine we will convert to always using the 3-4. In terms of 4-3 alignments we used to move Hardy into the middle to bring in smaller but faster edge rushers and if it is a clear pass rushing down/distance it won't matter what his size is he'll be there to get around the edge quickly while KK has the middle being pressured.

(theoretically ofc)

Burns first step and straight ahead speed coming from a hand in the dirt position is comparable to Miller.  However, as a stand up OLB Miller’s change of direction is substantially superior as measured by the 3 cone numbers.  Miller (6.7)... Burns (7.01) . This may be due to the height difference, but explains why Miller is so good in space.

So we're full time 3-4 now? Or is he only coming in when we play 3-4? Or is he playing 4-3 DE then 3-4 OLB? I think the thing people are worried about is the 4-3 DE part due to size although, I'd be concerned if yes is the answer for the first 2 questions.

Not that I put a ton of stock into it, but the Panthers had him announced as a Linebacker.

Well I got my edge. Maybe not the one I wanted. I'm just not the guy who worries about having a big heart. Sounds like an attribute to me. So torn on this. Guess we will forever compare Burns vs Sweat. Hey don't get me wrong Cam vs Blaine played out pretty well for us.

I'm a guy who worries about being told a player "doesn't respond to yelling".

After hearing that, I wouldn't have touched sweat with a ten-foot pole.

    • Yeah my crazy theory is Canales, Morgan, and Tillis watched the film and read the locker room.  They saw a team giving up on a player and frustrated with his production.  Seems like a pretty easy decision from there...
    • We'll probably still lose, but I believe we'll be more competitive. I don't think signing another vet QB is wise considering we already have one. I think we should trade for a young QB sitting on the bench. I'm bias, but I would like for us to consider Rattler. Carr is doing very well with the Saints so he may be their starter for a while, so they may be more willing to trade Rattler. I'm not too impressed with the QB draft class for next year. I would rather trade back our 1st round pick for more picks and go BPA. Continue with the rebuilding process, and if Rattler or whoever doesn't cut it, then hopefully Manning will be the guy in 2026. And Tepper has to back off with any decision making.
    • I said in another thread, I can’t find a glaring liability on offense. If Dalton can drop some 25+ yard dimes, we have some dudes that can make hay. Picks be damned. I’ll take a 2 or 3 pick day for 35 points on the board. We just need something. A spark. Anything.  We won’t be good, but it has potential to be fun to watch, and the tone in the stadium… hope.
