Vincent Richardson: Panthers selecting DT Tillery or Wilkins at #16

If we really plan on going to a 3-4 the majority of the time then 3-4 DE is our biggest need on defense.  College DTs like Wilkins and Tillery would both fit that need.

Everyone keeps approaching this draft from a 4-3 point of view, and while I would be somewhat surprised if went to a 3-4 the majority of time it isn't out of the realm of possibility.

I have to agree. Many are underestimating the importance of 3-4 DEs in that scheme and the ability of our current players to transition to it. KK should be fine. But Butler, Poe and Love aren’t good fits at all.

Another issue along these same lines. A player like Wilkins who can play either scheme, is still a good fit next year if things go South and we have a new HC with a specific scheme one way or another.

I guess the best examples would be Burns and Ferrell. Both would be solid picks but would they still be if we aren’t playing both schemes, or the scheme they fit better in next year?

 It’s going to be a long day....lol.

Would not at all be opposed to Wilkins at #16. Poe and/or Short could be cap casualties next year. Neither were anywhere close to being worth their cap hits last year. If they don't step it up this season, bye.

Man how would the world be if we were all given 2 year + to suck at our job until we were finally fired.

For me I'd be lucky to last 2 weeks.

LOL! It's true. I wish we could all negotiate big guaranteed money in our work contracts that made it financially difficult to give us the boot.

I can't see a DT in the 1st, could I see one as early as the 3rd potentially considering cap concerns, but considering the cap space we have coming up in 2020 / 2021 I'm not too worried.

If we are entertaining more ''Hybrid'' packages for pressure then Edge rushers are more important as we have four interior DL to fill out odd fronts when needed, reminder we added TJ Barnes (6'7'', 364 lbs) as well -- Short / Poe / Love / Butler / Barnes -- are likely the rotation and we could maybe see a surprise cut/trade of Butler.

When you look at edge the proven talent stops at - Addison / Irvin -- neither of which age is in favor of both being over 30...I can't see too many scenarios where we don't go Edge, or OL in the 1st depending on how the board falls.

I think with Washington seeing over the defensive line, and River at the helm as a a former DC who coached the 34 in SD, and the 43 in CHI that guys like KK, and Short have a chance to re-emerge, and if being truly optimistic give Butler a chance to show his worth in an Odd front flanking Poe, and Short.

Picture this front 7 for a 3-4:

LB - Addison / Thompson / Kuechly / Irvin (Rookie to rotate)

DL - Short / Poe / Butler (many forget his size 6'4'' / 325) with Love and Barnes as rotational guys up front

I'm not as low on Butler as many, being behind KK, and playing the same position as a former all-pro, then not playing the NT that Poe and Love share, also considering we feature three DE's and Short often on passing downs to supplement the rush and he's not had a ton of opportunity. I can see why he's been overlooked and has been a healthy scratch considering the staff's preference to only play young talent over a veteran once said veteran is injured. (Norwell, Moton, Williams) were all behind vets that were worse (Silatolu, Remmers).
