Vincent Richardson: Panthers selecting DT Tillery or Wilkins at #16

Yeh the article is click bait maybes

I’m all for some of the names mentioned, have advocated the safe pick of Wilkins Ford Ferrell or Jonah at 16,.. love some of the 2nd-4th round guys like Chase, Walker, Miller, Polite and Jelks as alternatives to sweat and Burns— they are just safer picks for going boom or bust— and I believe picking a boom or bust player in a year that is your last if you don’t win— that’s just playing with Fire.

for fans it’s easy to say we want or don’t want because of a hated college or tape,.. but when we wrong it’s all shittalking and laughs—

talking about the end of your career and going out in shame because you rolled snake eyes on a bad heart or a 1st round project is just stupid and when you have nothing to loose.

anyway— Wilkins is a great safe pick. Phili showed everyone what having a dominating middle can do for a team.

How great would it be taking Wilkins #16 and having Sweat drop enough for us to be able to trade up and nab him too? That would be a great start to the future of our DL.

One DT I see falling down the boards for whatever reason is Gerald Willis. I would love to grab him later on if we want a DT. Same with his teammate Joe Jackson. I think they both have talent and value where they are being ranked now.

Im all about Gerald Willis. I like Joe Jackson too. Shoeless Joe Ha.

if we go with Jonah Ford or Ferrell in the first(stocking with my safe picks) and skip on Christian Wilkins id be all about Gerald, and then picking up Jalen Jelks or Polite.

if Sweat is our pick, I’ll be happy but still, we will all be watching for the IR to happen— would be sickening.

Same. Not a fan of Jalen Jelks but I like his teammate Justin Hollins.

I’m very intrigued by Porter Gustin late in the draft too.

The title is misleading. He's just saying if we're really committed to transitioning to a 3-4 (which doesn't even sound like is necessarily the case), then we might stand to pick Wilkins or Tillery since they'll likely be the 3-techs available at our pick, and right now we're missing another quality 3-tech starter outside of Short.

I could see Wilkins but Tillery seems to be a fringe 1st rounder, so I don't think the value is there. Either way, the article didn't give the impression that it's based on any insider knowledge and more just an opinion/conjecture.

The ages of our DT's...

Kyle Love turns 33 this year. Short just turned 30. Poe turns 29 this year. Butler turns 25 but he isn't any good.  Poe can get released next year with minimum cap ramifications.

People have spent a ton of time belaboring our edge rushing situation. But, generating pressure up the middle is key. QB's hate pressure up the middle. Edge rush does no good if your interior defensive linemen aren't getting any push, that makes for an easy pocket for guys like Brees/Ryan to step up in.

I get the sentiment of not wanting to take a DT round 1, but if Wilkerson is there, it's going to be hard to pass on him.

If we really plan on going to a 3-4 the majority of the time then 3-4 DE is our biggest need on defense.  College DTs like Wilkins and Tillery would both fit that need.

Everyone keeps approaching this draft from a 4-3 point of view, and while I would be somewhat surprised if went to a 3-4 the majority of time it isn't out of the realm of possibility.
