Tony Pauline: Panthers infatuated with Will Grier, will consider him at #47

It's my opinion that the Panthers might believe that.

Said it already: I've believed for a while now that the Panthers are going to take a quarterback in this draft. I don't know who and I don't know what round it will be in. Grier in the second is one possibility, and it's the possibility that's getting the most chatter, but it's not the only one.

If it had been up to me, I would have gone after a veteran backup. The Panthers didn't choose to do that, believing instead of that drafting one was the better option. They might turn out to be right, they might turn out to be wrong, we'll see.

The only thing I find utterly ridiculous is suggesting that they just take their chances. You can throw away a season in Madden, but not in the real world.

Whew. We were in agreement until that last line. The only way the Panthers take their chances is by taking Will Grier in the 2nd.

How does Grier make this team stronger this season over Kyle Allen? How does taking a QB in the 2nd round over a rangy safety, or a DE, OT, DT make this team better positioned this season? That's nonsense. The picks we would lose out on in the 2nd round is mind-boggling, all so we could take a backup QB who wouldn't even see the field for a few years.

the "tee-hee were not just gonna tank" is such a bland low IQ attempt to co-opt the narrative because the actual point cannot be disputed

The Panthers aren't winning a super bowl with a mid round rookie QB and if Cam's shoulder is a storyline again then they need an actual franchise QB, not Bobby Blue Collar from Huddle Poster's Favorite CFB team.

If the Panthers take him in the second round, then the answer to that question would be Norv Turner.

And there's no way the Panthers could, or should, resign themselves to that kind of thinking.

Mr. Scot, I think you're arguing semantics here. No, the team should not intentionally lose games to get a higher draft pick. I'm one of the few that thought it was a better to win the final game against the Saints, even though it hurt the team's draft leverage. A winning attitude is more important than a higher draft pick - I agree with that sentiment 1M percent!

In this specific case though, the reward does not outweigh the risk. It's not a risk you mitigate more than you already have with current backups. It's one you accept. Your contingency plan is to draft a QB with your 1st rounder next year, because you've addressed your biggest needs in this year's draft. If Cam is indeed injured beyond repair, then you can trade your 1-3 round picks if need be to get "Your Guy" in the first next year. Not "A Guy" this year that you hope you can develop into someone more than they're projected to be. And if Cam is healthy, then you pay him what he's worth and you manage the roster accordingly.

The Panthers have drafted only one Cam Newton, and several Jimmy Clausen clones over the last decade. Pick your poison.

Does anyone really think that Grier would be any better as a rookie than Allen? Really?

If Cam goes down again, the season is tanked anyway and we're looking for a QB in the 1st next year no matter what.

We are not tanking for the last time, that crap is ridiculous. Ur not telling Olsen, Luke, and CMC to tank dude. Yes Grier is better than Allen go watch the film. He will be better than any of these first rd guys, watch and see. Someone will pick at the end of Rd 1.

Did I say we'll tank?

I'm saying we'll suck ass no matter what if Cam's shoulder goes out.

You're taking a lot of things for certain that aren't, especially the part about a backup QB not seeing the field for a few years.

The Panthers backup quarterback could very well see the field this year. That's why you want to make sure you've got the best one you can get.

And the overrating of Kyle Allen for one game under basically preseason conditions is just ridiculous. Allen earned the right to compete for a spot on the team. That's it. It's not even guaranteed don't make the squad, much less be a future star

Like I said, there's plenty they indicate the Panthers are taking a quarterback in this draft. Don't know who. Don't know where. But I do firmly believe it's going to happen.

Hey I'm with u Scot. This people just can't handle u talking about another QB starting over Newton. It's going to happen one day and could be soon. No one knows how bad that shoulder is but him and Panthers organization. U have to plan u are not going to have him all season. Kyle Allen is not the answer, sorry everyone got excited over him playing good in an exhibition game.

Yet you aren't overrating a rookie QB at all right?

Right. It's not tanking in terms of losing games on purpose. It's that we'll just plain suck.
