Tony Pauline: Panthers infatuated with Will Grier, will consider him at #47

I'm not crazy about drafting a QB this year but forget Cam's injury. What are we willing to pay him the next time he's up for a contract? He will be in his 30s, the running game will not be as valued. His passing will need to improve drastically to pay him franchise QB money. If the team had someone they felt good about, they could let Cam walk in free agency.

This QB class reminds me of the 2007 class (Russell, Kolb, Beck, Quinn, Stanton in Rounds 1-2). I'd stay the hell away from it and wait until next year. If Cam really is hurt (I think he is) I'd just tank or figure out a way to get Jake Fromm next year, who I think will be the next Brett Favre.

We're not tanking :eyeroll:

If you seriously think that's going to happen, let's review the messages you'd have to send to some key players.

This is quite possibly Greg Olsen's last year. You think we're going to tell him "Oh, sorry Greg. Screw your last year. Cam is the only guy who really matters."

Or perhaps, "Hey Christian. We know you're just getting started and all but we're gonna throw this season so don't get too worked up."

While were at it, "Hi, DJ. Nice rookie season last year. I'm sure you'd love to build on it so that you can start building toward your first real contract, but I'm afraid we're dumping this season. Sorry."

Speaking of which, you know this is going to be a contract year for certain guys (Darryl Williams, for example). You wanna tell all of them they're just going to have to settle for what we give them because this year doesn't matter anymore?

Oy :poison:

Hey, for that matter, has anybody in the "let's tank" department even considered that, you know, people get hurt playing football? And I hate to tell you, but even in seasons where you're supposedly tanking, they can still get hurt. What are you going to tell those guys? "Hey, sorry you got hurt in a meaningless season but it wasn't really about you anyway"?

There is no sillier idea being thrown around this board than the notion that we can (or should) just tank a year out of 50-60 other guy's careers just because one guy goes down.

Sheesh. This isn't Madden. There's no reset button. These guys are real people who have real lives and real careers. Do some people not understand just how thoroughly unrealistic this whole idea is?

Good grief, people!

Here is the direction I want to go.  They are talking day 2.  I still think that is too early for him. But in the 3rd I could get behind.   I would prefer pick 100.  But if it has to be 77 so be it. But st least use the first 2 rounds to fill some holes.

Northwestern_logo.gif Clayton Thorson, QB, Northwestern
Of the non-first-round quarterbacks in the 2018 NFL Draft, I think Thorson has the most potential to surprise as a pro. He could be a second-day pick, and I think he has the potential to be the next steal from Day 2 to become a good starting quarterback.

Thorson has shown that he has pro potential in terms of his skill set. He can throw the deep out with a fastball that can be fit into tight windows. Thorson also has a quick delivery, but is a bit too mechanical. Scouts say that he has a strong arm and is smart and athletic while also being a leader with excellent intangibles. As a passer, Thorson has a lot of natural talent and development that is impressive. What really stands out his ability to stand tall in the pocket, read the field, work through his progressions, and deliver the ball. Thorson really has advanced field vision for a quarterback. He is not the type to run if his first target is covered, and he is comfortable working off his primary read. Thorson has good size, pocket presence, and a strong arm.

Thorson makes some throws with great accuracy, but there are throws that get away from him and he needs to become more consistent. His supporting cast at Northwestern was awful, so that hurt his accuracy as well.

Multiple team sources thought that Thorson would become a first-round pick early in his career. However his knee injury at the end of his junior year, not producing huge numbers, and some ugly throws here and there have him as a second-day pick. In this analyst's opinion, Thorson will be a massive steal. If he had played at Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas, or another major program with talent around him, I think he would be a clear-cut first-round pick. I think Thorson will go on the second day of the 2019 NFL Draft, and no lower than the fourth round. He could be a steal and become a good starting quarterback in the NFL.

Anything before than the compensatory 3rd is too soon for a QB. I honestly feel the front office is in win-now mode, as shown through free agency moves. They've also acknowledged that Cam is human and his body is breaking down from the years of abuse via mismanagement of the roster and playcalling.

A young talented speed rusher, a safety that can keep everything in front of him, and most importantly a competent offensive oline, could realistically lead to a Super Bowl run. Caveat that with the team avoids any major injuries to starters, including Cam - depth is not our strength.

If drafting a QB compromises the team's ability to accomplish the aforementioned, then the opportunity cost is too high. At least on paper, this team is too close to start over at QB. Particularly when that QB is a late riser in the draft. Grier ain't coming in like Russell or Brady and leading us to the big dance. He was considered a late rounder a month ago. Now he's a day one, early day two guy - I don't buy it.

Remember Hurney in 'win now' mode last time....lol

I just hope he doesn't trade up to get Grier and make good on his first attempt when he tried to trade up in the first round to pick Clausen.

nevermind just talking about taking a QB with a 2nd.... Yall know this could get a lot worse right?

carolina without a hall of fame talent at quarterback is tanking whether they try to or not. stupid to waste a 2nd rounder on a lottery ticket that's probably not even good enough to sneak into the 1st at a position that will make any middling prospect a 1st round pick.

as for olsen the gm shouldn't have to tell him poo after the "im thinking about quitting to be a broadcaster if you don't give me more money" lol like why the fug would anyone have to explain anything to that guy? go get in the booth if you don't want to play anymore. he's the last guy that should be giving input on roster decisions.

Even stupider to just resign to that idea and not bother trying.

The Panthers absolutely should go for the best backup / option at quarterback they can get. How they choose to do that is debatable. Debating whether or not they should do it is ridiculous.

Given that there's not just Newton's health status to consider but also his impending contract, pretty much anything is on the table.
