There are ways to accomplish that without using precious draft picks. Not too mention that any rookie QB, especially those chosen after 1st, rarely is ready to be effective in those situations. If that’s the issue sign a veteran backup. Not a question mark at the expense of another huge need.

Established veterans want their money. Drafting a qb in the 2nd or later gives you a cheap back up for 5 years. Plus I’m thinking they are pegging this guy as their insurance plan for Cam’s arm. Grier can sling it all over the field. Give him DJ, Samuel, CMC and Olsen and he might look like the real deal.

1 question do you think a rookie in this draft can be more impactful than Cox, Obada, and Hayes?? Because that's what we need.. If a rookie can come in and make these guys depth players (which they are) instead of starters (which they will be if we can't get a competent replacement) then that is the most important question...

I don't think a rookie will be more impactful than Irvin and Addison and those are our starters. I really doubt they will be more impactful than Obada. When you get down to Cox or the rest yeah they might be more impactful but honestly so could a third rounder as well. The point is that no one who is a rookie at 16 will be a starter so the whole conversation about being screwed if we don't go edge rusher is way overblown. They aren't going to be starters this year and won't  be that important as folks seem to think.

If Burns, Sweat or Gary is there at 16 then yes. If not we should got OT/OG.

Doubt sny of those guys will be better than Addison or Irvin this year. Maybe down the road but they won't be the savior's people think they will be.

Backups make about what PKs do. That’s not where you make a money-value move. You could sign McCown or Josh Johnson for 2M or less.

He could look like the real deal or he could be no different than Kyle Allen with those weapons. He could be just like the majority of post first round QBs and be awful. Lot of questions for an idea being passed off as a no-brained.

Jourdan Rodriguez said it best..

"Why draft a QB high in this (bad QB)" For insurance or to get a few extra wins if Cam goes down.  When if Cams goes down again you lose out and improve your chances in landed 1 of the forsure better quality QB'S coming out in next years draft"

https://wfnz.radio.com/blogs/nick-wilson-and-josh-parcell/wilson-parcell-jourdan-rodrigue-panthers-draft-presser

I agree with her breakdown completely..

That assumes that next year's class is as good as advertised and that is always a gamble. Plus  if Cam is healthy and we end up drafting at 25 or higher, many of these  great QBs will be gone. So we end up with no one better than this year and they have one year less in the system in the event we don't want to pay Cam 35-40 million.

Statistically speaking, regardless of what they do in their rookie year, the talent of a first round DE vs a 3-4 round DE is the difference of a starter/potentially all-pro and a role player/back up.

Those are statistics, probability. And the Panthers need a DE for the future.

It’s actually quite difficult to explain to something so asinine to someone. It’s obvious. I mean an olineman probably won’t make a difference either. He’ll, most positions won’t right away.  Why draft anyone?

Charles Johnson was a third rounder and became a starter for a long time. Hardy was a sixth rounder and if he wasn't nuts may have been our best DE during the time he was here. Don't talk about the league, talk about the Panthers.  Mike Rucker was a second rounder. He had 3 sacks his rookie season. Peppers was the only guy I remember going off as a rookie.  Honestly there are tons of DEs who have busted up and down the draft.

Sure we need to draft players but the idea that Sweat is going to tear it up for example is wishful thinking. And the idea that drafting a DE is more important than drafting an OT or a QB is overblown. That is the point.  The logic that we can't find an impactful DE in the third round and have to go edge rusher in the first goes against the concept of this draft having impactful players at DE up and down the draft.

Yes there are, but the Panthers didn't choose those options. They chose this one.

Yeah and we are not rolling with Allen as the backup. Just sit back and get ready to see our new backup in about 4 and half days!
