Our entire draft direction is contingent on Moton.

I know this has been discussed before.  But with the draft right around the corner I think it’s fitting to have this discussion again.

Does our front office view Moton as a competent/ elite LT?

If we do see him at left tackle it opens up this draft completely to selecting the BPA for out multiple needs.  Edge, Safety, DL, CB.

We have looked at a bunch of RT this draft season. And only Dillard and Little at LT.

My hope is that Moton can be a competent LT.  Because I don’t like any of the LT’s this year at 16.  If he can play LT then we can definitely go Edge in the 1st. If they are gone, go Cody Ford. He is a hell of a lot safer than Dillard or Little.  If we go LT in first we have to get an Edge.  So getting one of the quality Safeties in the second round may be out of the question.

What say you?

I don’t think that’s true. Also, Hurney will have 6-7 guys that they feel good about and worthy of 16, BPA. That could very well end up being someone not a linemen.

With that being said— Moton has been really good.

Don't be shocked if they opt to put Williams on the left.

Please tell me Ron isn't dumb enough to rely on a guy who has already failed on the left over the guy who seemed able to play really well there, as of the beginning of last season. You're poo-stirring again, aren't you?

Nope. Word on the street is both Moton and Williams will get plenty of looks on the left. It is possible.

That’s what I’m talking about, I don’t see why everyone’s so quick to doubt this kid. He’s played extremely well everywhere they’ve put him. Much easier to get someone that can compete with Williams on the right side with the option of sliding one of the 2 to left guard.

If it’s a straight up competition I don’t see how Williams would win that. He’s good on the right, but he’s looked bad when they’ve tried sliding him over

LT is a position that is hard to fill in the NFL.  Why the hell would we give it to a guy who is most likely not gonna be on the roster next year.  And if it is a competition there is no way Williams beats out Moton.

I have been saying this for months--got into some heated arguments where relatives and next of kin became involved--if anyone can provide a sensible, logical, intelligent answer to this question in 3 parts, I will concede that Moton is in their plans at LT.

Why did Moton not beat out Matt Kalil at LT last year?

Why did Moton not go to LT when Williams and Kalil were injured (instead we hired a street free agent)?

At the end of the season, when we benched Cam and the season was done, why did we not take a long look at Moton at LT?

As soon as the season ended (around week 15), we should have started looking at the future--it was clear then that Kalil was not returning. Please don't say Clark was better at LT than RT--that is a dumb argument.  RTs in free agency are much easier to find than LTs.  You put your best LT on Cam's blind side.  I  am willing to bet that Matsko knows that.  So I can only speculate that these Sofa GMs are basing their theory on the fact that Moton had a decent game vs. Dallas in relief duty week 1.

Williams (based on my observations) may have a better or equal shot at LT---but I am almost certain that he is not a LT either.  THAT is why we are looking for one.  This is why I think Cody Ford (as Jourdan says) might be the pick.  He is a dominant G with the athleticism to play LT.  Do not be surprised to see Williams at LG and Ford at LT if we do that.  Moton, in my opinion, is a solid RT.

@MHS831   And. Here we go.  Lol

i will have to agree with you that there is some question with the FO if Moton can be a LT.  The way they have approached the offseason tells me that role is not as settled as I once thought.

But if that is true I will tell you that I think that spells trouble to our draft.  And that selecting a back up QB should be happening.  Because Cam will be on the shelf early on.

Why did Amini ever start over Norwell? Why did Remmers ever start over Williams? Why did Van Roten start over Larsen last season? Why were Bell/Chandler ever seen as anything even resembling a solution at OT?

The only thing that seems certain about our OL decisions is that we're gonna fug them up.

    • Easily. To be able to plug in a backup LT without much drop off from your starter? That could mean the difference between playoffs or sitting at home in January. Good/serviceable smart young and healthy LTs that won’t lose you a ball game at reasonable $$ don’t just come along every day. Everyone talks about the most important positions on a football team… backup LT is in the top 10.  Picture next year… the team is scrappy and competitive, 4 and 3 record, second place in the South. Morale is good. devastating run game that Let’s our marginal defense get plenty of rest. We play the Bucs and win, going to 5 and 3, but we lose Ickey to a high ankle sprain. Atl loses that week and are now at 5 and 3 as well. There is no Ickey and no BC because we let him go… and we go in to Atl the next week for a battle of first in the south. Week after that is the Jets…. Now they lose both by 10 and 3, respectively, and fall to 5 and 5 going in to their bye week. Atl is at 7 and 3. Out of typical Panthers desperation, they try to rush Ickey back in to the lineup with a saints game coming up…  Back to good old Panthers football, always playing catchup. Another season at .500 and the fans sadly rejoice in mediocrity, when playoffs were in reach. This team always overestimates its ability to pick up quality o line depth in the draft or FA and it always blows up in their faces. Like Chuba, I see him as being part of the core that Dan is trying to build. Work on his contract now and see if we can come out with something mutually beneficial. I’d consider 3 yrs at $25m to be very fair.
    • it would be great to have "double trouble" again, I even had a T- shirt for Williams and Stewart and the double trouble logo, was a great time to be Panthers fan. We shall see...
    • Sounds like a plan. Those are the teams we should be mimicking! lol
