Opinion:Why Gary should be the pick if he falls

Make no mistake about it Gary is a risk.. your taking a chance on a guy who has shown no production to justify being a picked this high. It’s a risk I take 9 times out of 10 you know why? Generational talent. If Gary had the production to go with his skill set we would be ignoring him because we wouldn’t have a shot in hell at him like Bosa. As I’m writing this I’m reading other huddle post about his stock dropping due to medical red flags(he played through a shoulder injury why is that bad?), I say good.

We are picking at 16. How often is the number 16 player said to be the most talented player in the draft? Not often. And make no mistake friends if we are going to compete for a super bowl we need a dominate pass rusher. Not a oh, he will be solid or can contribute day 1 guy. We need a guy that commands double teams, teams scheme away from him kind of guy. After the top 10 no one like that is likely on the board unless Gary falls. I love Sweat, Burns, Oliver and all the rushers ahead of them but no, none of their upside matches Gary.4297C36C-CBF5-4992-B5A9-8AA56CC14934.thumb.jpeg.e9f4e531d88c6fbf5f891a144a837bf0.jpeghis athletic web shows extreme explosiveness, how explosive you say? Well who is the number Pass Rusher in the league? Most would say Arron Donald(Mack, and Miller as well) but let’s compare Donald to Gary.6E4F46FB-9EEF-4E3B-A728-33CA8640D833.thumb.jpeg.44baca187236f9a32cef12f3db49829b.jpeg0C411395-36CD-4752-A1F0-E17A63BD3E47.thumb.jpeg.b1cca885758a5df7afb151ae6f5537f7.jpeg8761A90D-0CAA-4EB8-A270-CBC9734DAA62.thumb.png.b602321e7edef4b84008ca000a1fdb58.png

Very few Defensive linemen could surpass the amazing numbers Donald put up. He put on a show. Gary is one of them. He’s bigger, longer 34 inch arms which are great, and he’s Faster(and quicker). I don’t think many players in this draft are a danger to compete for the best player at their position. Gary can. Bosa and Allen are much safer guys and more likely to have success, but their ceiling probably isn’t lead the league in sacks kind of guys. Gary would walk on to the panthers roster the most talented player ever behind Peppers.

Not to say Gary will reach that level either but he could. He has the ability to do that.  Your lucky to even have a shot at that picking at 16. If we are experimenting with 3-4 and such why not take a guy who comes from that system. Gary could play any down lineman or outside rusher in a 3-4 thanks to his skills. I’ve seen some of you say he looks fat.. well 40B0E6BC-44E4-44A9-B573-8E553A59B8E6.jpeg.b16663101d2b5c8e4f00e95b0610cccc.jpegnot D.k Metcalf but certainly not fat. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders and is a football guy, this isn’t some combine warrior who was created in the weight room. He opened his own sports agency Rashan Gary sports of which he is the CEO and seems to be thinking of football long term.

For those of us who say he wasn’t productive, Show me a 3-4 under tackle who was putting up huge numbers and sacks. Because by design of the scheme your job is to take on double teams, and in Gary’s case as you have seen often triple.  Teams ran away from Gary consistently from the film I watched, Michigan did a lot of blitzing and didn’t ask Gary to more than stuff the run(which he is very good at)and take on blocks.  To sum it up we aren’t picking top 8 in which case I could see the caution for Gary, but at 16 all these guys are flawed and are risks which is why they are here, Why not swing for the fences and get the most talented one?

Edit:for those of u who wonder what kind of person he is or love for the game here’s a little background on him plus you can see how much he has changed from then til now.

I think we gotta rethink what we know about what this team needs in a pass rusher. Our “plugging in some 3-4 stuff” this year could very well be the beginning of a full on transition. We might not be looking for a 6’4 277 guy any more.  If we pass on a 4-3 sized DE for someone 20 or 30 lbs lighter it might be a clue what the more distant future holds for our defense. Don’t think Marty would make the mistake again of getting a guy like Everette brown or that guy from SC a year or two later again just to have them primarily be 4-3 DEs

Depending on who is on the board I have no problems with Gary. If we do take a chance on him I would also want to take a guy like Christian Miller in the 3rd.

In our 3-4 alignment we could go with Short, Poe(draft DT), Gary on the line and then have Addison and Irvin off the edge. We would then have Miller to learn and for depth. I think that pass rush has a lot of potential in obvious passing situations. I am not sure how I feel about Gary in the run game as a 3-4 DE though.

I mean, this is a quality post with detail, opinion and research.  Whether you agree with the pick or not, well-played!

PFF has Gary rated as a 2nd round player.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/draft-andy-isabella-is-a-moving-chess-piece-worth-taking-in-the-first-round-of-the-2019-nfl-draft they also have Andy Isabella as a first round player.  Pff metric is more based off production and statistics. They guys don’t really scout traits and things of that nature. I was always taught disruption of forcing adjustments is production. That won’t show up to PFF.

I have very serious doubts that a guy 9.5 sacks in 34 college games is the answer to our pass rush woes. He's highly likely to be a typical workout warrior.

Gary was big time and on top of boards before the workout. Kid has always been a football player. He went to all the AAU circuits, the all American and all star games, he has been on the NFL radar since day one. Ahead of Oliver and anyone else you mention. I feel like stats in college are one of the worst things you can base your opinion off of.

They can be a indicator that a player is good no dout. But they can be manufactured by a good scheme or under whelmed by a bad one. I think the latter for Gary.

When you have to talk about high school you're pretty much admitting that he sucked in college.

No I was giving you a background check that he wasn’t created in the weight room or just an athlete as you suggested. I never said he sucked in college, nobody else had either or he wouldn’t be projected so high. Smart scouts see traits in people.. traits are like weapons a coach can harness to use against other teams. Looking at just oh he had 9.5 sacks  doesn’t account for scheme, triple teams, failed coaching, or talent around whatever. That’s why he is still rated so high even tho he “sucked in college”
