We need to keep doing what dougie just did. When skating to the puck, if there is a Cap chasing behind you, turn around and hit the mother fuger in the mouth.

Honestly for playoff hockey I’m surprised how unchippy this game is.

So that was a solid first period. Canes need to capitalize in the offensive zone some. Keep the puck moving but throw shots on net. Don't let Holtby have an easy night. Dude is rattled.

Defensively we look great. Couple lapses but a couple really good defensive plays. Mrazek looks sharp. Just keep dictating play.

I think I'm greedy and/or haven't watched enough games in recent years because I'm incredibly frustrated with our effort in the offensive zone...  I'm not sure where the balance is between getting shots on net versus getting a GREAT shot on net, because a couple of times it looked like one of our players made a great move and set the Caps up to over pursue, and we missed a pass into the neutral zone.  I also was frustrated with the 1 shot possessions.  I know sometimes you gotta take them, but a few where we shot it, it pops off the goalie and right back to them as our other players were still skating up for offense.  I was just looking for more possession and passing to find the best shot...  but, I imagine the Caps defense has something to do with that as well.

But, in my fairly uninformed opinion, I agree, the defense has been absolutely outstanding.

That and the D isn't leaving him hanging like in games 1 and 2. They look like they could beat the team from Iceland in Mighty Ducks right now!

The Caps are dangerous. If you play for the setup plays in the offensive zone, you play into their really good defense. They want you to pass it around so they can break out with speed. By pushing in and ripping shots or throwing it around the board, we push them deeper into their defensive end. So even if we go one shot and out, we can get back and trap the neutral zone or our defensive blue line and back check them. Also, a portion of it is being thin up front with Marty going down. Quick changes.

I agree with you though that we could be getting better chances if we just make that one extra (but safe) pass. No risks, but if you see something more open than yourself, get it to him. Something I'm sure we'll see in the 2nd because that was the only real negative of that period.

Appreciate the insight, brosef!  I have a good general idea of how the game is or should be played, but in regards to specific teams' strengths and strategies, I haven't followed it closely enough to know any of that.  So, your explanation is helpful and definitely makes a ton of sense.

Funnily enough, I learned the game and rules from playing NHL video games since I was a kid (going back to like NHL 94 or 95)...  so it was informative to a point, but no one ever dumps and chases or anything so, some slight differences from real hockey lol.
