Draft Countering Our Rivals

ColumbusCounty

Recommended Posts

Bored at the job so I've been reading a lot about the draft, free agency, etc...

I've been researching and looking over our needs as a team. That said we also have to approach it while considering how to attack and react to our rivals (specifically NO).  For example, Thomas Davis was picked as the answer to Michael Vick.

...You have 4 picks in top 100..If your a GM, how would you maneuver considering the division we play in? Any Thoughts??

Top 100 with 4 picks to counter our rivals.

#1 Pick Greedy Williams as we, IMO, have one of the best WR corp in our divison. So covering Julio, Mike Evans, Michael Thomas.  A 6'2 corner with 4.37 speed.

Will also help with facing Matt Ryan, & Drew Brees.

#2 Pick DE Jaylon Ferguson dude got kicked out of the combine for something he did at 18 years old.  Freak Athlete who can play with hand in the dirt and experience standing up on the edges. We have some good tackles in this division.

#3 Kaleb McGary OT countering Saints Cam Jordan, Sheldon Rankins on stunts, Falcons Tark McKinley, Michael Bennet, Grady Jarrett, Vic Beasley, & Bucs JPP, Gerald McCoy, and there Lbs Deon Bucannon, & Carl Nassib.

#4 Safety Chauncy Gardner-Johnson again good Qbs and great WRs.

Good question OP. I'll need to think about this one and get back to you. I'll be watching this thread though in the meantime.

One question though, do you mean countering what teams already have? Or what they might do in the draft?

I think I gotta have that top tier guy in the first... Gary, Burns, Oliver, Sweat. Any of these guys could swing out into pass coverage for a spell or has sideline to sideline ability to chase down a ball carrier.

In the second give me adderley, a center field type guy who play single high and compliment Reid.

In the 3rd I would love another secondary guy maybe a nickel or in the box guy abrams if he’s there.

The second 3rd I would love tyree Jackson as a big bodied development kid similar to cam in size and speed.

Based on what they already have.

I think if were countering the saints who are the top of the division, you need a pass rush to get to Brees so atleast one pass rusher. They have athletes all over the field that catch passes, Ginn,Thomas, kamara, thay qb  they split out at wr and run gadget plays with. You have to be able to match that so yeah we’re probably gonna need to draft at a minimum 2 dbs.

Saints: Cam Jordan, Sheldon Rankins, Malcolm Brown, Davenport

Falcons: Takk, Michael Bennett, Grady Jarrett, Vic Beasley

Bucs: Nassib/Gholsten, Vita Vea, McCoy, JPP

And that's before the draft...I like the thought of this pick. Actually, It wouldn't shock me to see us grab Jonah in the first. We'd have a damn good RG and insurance in case one of the tackles had to miss some time + an option in case we can't resign Williams. Improves ground and pass game while keeping Cam clean. Then again, maybe the same applies to McGary. How big is the drop off from Jonah to McGary?

Db's have to be in play. When Donte went down last year you could see the impact immediately. We are in the dark on the recovery status of Ross Cockrell. I had a feeling he was going to do well here when he signed. At the time at minimum better that Worley.

Bradberry is Bradberry, not a ballhawk but does his job ...going into a contract year though.

Can't really pick a player until you know who is there and at what positional. But we need a Free safety and a shutdown corner and a QB if Cam goes down. Add an OLB/ edge rusher and a McCaffrey lite Swiss army knife. Add a few O linemen for depth and there you go.....

1. Pass rusher (Oliver, Burns, Sweat, Gary in that order). If all are gone Jonah then Dillard.

2. If we got a pass rusher than oline guard or tackle. If we got a OT than edge rusher. (Chase, Polite,Ferguson)

3.DT or Safety

3b. Safety or DT

This works for me....
