Tony Pauline: Taylor Rapp would be excellent fit for Panthers

Umm, I know you guys get really hung up on the 40 times, but Rapp is certainly not un-athletic.

His 3 cone time was 0.01 seconds slower than Hooker for 2nd among all safeties. His short shuttle and long shuttle were both first. His agility was better than any other safety at the combine. His long speed may not be as good, but his quickness and change of direction is as good as any safety in the draft. Colin Jones is fast, but WRs can shake him easily. His bench was top 10 and vertical was 1 inch from top 10.

That 40 time is concerning, but 40 time <> athletic. We see better times every year, but that's track times and technique taught pre-combine. Some guys play fast and some don't. If he gets an INT, maybe he gets caught from behind by a 4.4 WR if it's a long return. I'd still rather have the guy who can stay with the WR and knock the ball away than the guy who gets his ankles busted but can catch up to the WR before he scores.

Exactly

Re-signing Reid took guys like this off our board or knocked them way down our board IMO. I think we've finally woken up and realize that we need to find a true centerfielder type of FS.

Maybe. I won't be fully convinced of that until I see it.

This guy is the type of defensive back that Rivera usually goes for.

I would love it if we got Rapp in the 2nd. Why do people fall for draft results over body of college work every. single. year???

You mean workouts? It's a combo of both. Plenty of great college players just don't have the physical traits to translate to the NFL. If you were assembling a college all-star team then yeah, just look at the body of work on the college field but NFL teams aren't trying to do that, they're trying to assemble an NFL team.

I just saw Jarvis Jones run by my truck. Slowly.

Right, and most of his measurables at the combine were in the top percentile.

I'm a pass on this cat, reading over his combine report / 4.76 40 time at his Pro Day I'm good, all that info read says ''box'' safety to me and there are plenty of those available. And Reid is already the perfect fit there but has the ability to play FS, but it's not his natural.

You have linebackers that come out with better speed, I want a guy who's tape matches his measured athleticism.

I want a true free safety that can play the quarter, the third, and the half.

But then Rapp ran a grandfatherly 4.76 and nearly every NFL team that thought of taking Rapp with a high choice changed their minds.

Slow times do that in the NFL. If safeties run a 4.5 40 or more, there is a good chance they get picked high. Slower than that and it’s bad news. Rapp is facing some bad news and his draft ranking is plummeting.

LOL, you've quoted an article that's basically saying, "Great news! Taylor Rapp ran a bad 40, so now he might fall to us!" The only people that put this much emphasis on one time are draft talking heads and bored ass fans.

"Here is the thing, though: Tape doesn’t lie. Rapp isn’t the fastest player on the field. We already know that. But he plays fast. Jerry Rice probably wouldn’t have run the fastest 40 ever either, but once on the field he ran past defensive backs all the time."
