Bumped into Jim Schwartz the other day

Had a nice chat with him about Eagles vs. Panthers game last season.  He said Norv Turner completely changed the game plan mid game and he had no idea how to stop the Panthers offense.  Said it took him completely by surprise.  Overall, Jim was extremely nice and he did not hesitate to talk football.  He had nothing but nice things to say about the Panthers.

He’s one of the best DCs in the game. Was terrible as HC in Detroit. Thanks for sharing this, interesting.

Norv is an incredible offensive mind. We are lucky to have him in Carolina.

Agree... and I truly believe Ron is a great defensive mind.  Just has had struggles with clock management- I hope this new coach we hired for that purpose helps.

Along with Ron focusing on defense and letting Norv run the offense without interference

I'd give him another shot at being a HC, he's a smart dude and not everyone is successful there first go around + it was Detroit.

What is a Ditka defense? Ditka was a HOF TE and a head coach who's DC (Ryan) did exactly what you are suggesting.

I absolutely think Rivera is a great defensive coach. It's why I'm so baffled that he let Washington completely tank our D for so long. I admire the hell out of loyalty, but damn...

There's your answer.

Rivera has cited Andy Reid as telling him not to give up on people on his staff. And while I get the rationale, you've got to be wise in the way that you apply it. I wouldn't say there's much evidence that Rivera has been that so far (definitely not when it came to Shula).

I am hopeful that the other coaching changes will make a difference for us long term.  Norv is great on his side of the ball.  RR is a great DC. He has some limitations as a head coach. But I still support him.  But adding the new Wr coach and most importantly the new secondary coach Fewell will pay dividends.  We are not gonna make it to the Super Bowl and and be a consistent winner by having to pick up aging vets for positions simply because we can’t develop players.  

And to the point of this OP, I am actually pretty excited that if we can keep Cam upright, Norv is just so nuanced that he will have this offense clicking this year.  If Olsen can stay healthy. And Moore and Samuel can take another step forward it can be a dynamic offense. I think the biggest jump in production will be from Samuel.

 And his failure to recognize and do something about the calls on defense is exactly when i lost faith in RR as a HC. It’s one thing to not fix the offense. That’s never been his thing. Horrible decisions nonetheless. But if I(and many) can see it from my couch, you better believe coaches did. 

  No CB is going to be effective playing outside leverage, 10 yards off the ball, with no safety help in the middle. This was routine. The long pass/PI to Alshon that almost beat us at Philly. Explain that coverage. He should have took over then. 

  You know I defended him(well his record mainly) up until the DEF fell apart. That’s his baby. And not encouraged by going “hybrid” in a ultimatum year.

I seriously question whether Norv Turner is going to be here "long term".

Norv's ideal scenario is likely to coach a few more years and then pass the job to Scott.

Mind you, Scott might turn out to be a talented OC in his own right, but he's not going to be his dad, at least not starting out. One of the reasons Norv is as good as he is is because he's been around forever and he's pretty much seen it all. There's no substitute for what that kind of experience gives you.
