Tony Pauline: Panthers showing lot of interest in Darnell Savage, who will be a top-75 choice.

Twenty-nine teams were on hand for pro day at Maryland, as the program could have as many as five players selected in this year’s draft, which would be its most in 10 years.

Safety Darnell Savage stood on his awesome combine numbers but went through position drills. He looked very fluid and especially smooth in his hips.

The New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers are showing a lot of interest in Savage, who will be a top-75 choice.

While I understand the Panthers' interest, as I previously posted the team will load up on safeties in the draft, the interest from the Jets and Steelers surprised me. The Steelers took a safety in the first round last year, while the Jets took two safeties in the top 40 picks in 2017. I was later told the belief is that Savage could transition to cornerback, so the interest from the Steelers and Jets made more sense in that light.

so if we take him with one of our picks in the 3rd, could he start at free safety?

More than likely, he'd still have to have the playbook down but he's definitely a player who should be on the field sooner than later but we all know how that works in Carolina...

I was set on Chauncey Gardner-Johnson at FS but after digging more into Savage, I think he has moved ahead of Gardner-Johnson for me. I don’t think either will be available in the 3rd (although very possible) so we might have to take them in the 2nd. I don’t mind because both are talented FS prospects.
