Early Depth Chart Check - How We Look on Paper

Just not a big fan of using 1st round picks on interior OL. Especially when we have huge needs at pass rusher and DL and this is quite possibly the best pass rusher and DL draft ever. Using a 1st rounder on an OG this year would feel like a huge waste of an opportunity.

Nothing is for certain and strong years for groups sometimes don't pan out. Being we are sitting at 14 and if some how a top C or G drops I would have no problem pulling the trigger. Certainly if we have no value pick then you take need over everything else. Just depends on how the apples fall at 14.

What? This looks like one of the worst teams we have had on paper in a few years.

Offensively we should be pretty damn good. Just need to get a back up RB and dare I say a big body WR. I do have some concerns with Samuel but if he’s healthy he’ll be a pro bowler.

Defensively yeah I’m a little scared right now. They really need an edge rusher to deliver and a safety to pair with Reed.

No top C or G will "drop".... the top at both will be there, most likely including Jonah Williams, who people are projecting as a T mostly, but could play G as well

I still think we can improve on that OL, if nothing just with depth. It would be nice to make an upgrade over Van Roten/Larsen at guard too.

That defense is going to be questionable, regardless. Even if we ball out and draft a DE and a FS, there will still be a lot of questions. Do Poe and Short play up to their capabilities? Are we able to upgrade at nickel? Will our LB corps see a drop off without Thomas Davis? Does Mario Addison start to decline in terms of production? Will we get anything out of our developmental/depth DE's?

People saying we are set on offense, but we are not. We are relying on Williams to come back from injury, assuming Paradis will be good for us, assuming Turner bounces back, assuming GVR will suddenly raise his level. Really the only hope on the line is Moton. Our backup RB situation is awful as well. We also should hope Samuel continues to stay healthy and Cam's shoulder lasts the whole season. We have so many holes to fill through out the whole roster.

OFFENSE:
WR1: D.J. Moore - Torrey Smith
LT: Taylor Moton - #Dillon Gordon#
LG: Greg Van Roten
C: #Matt Paradis#- Tyler Larsen
RG: Trai Turner - Brendan Mahon
RT: Daryl Williams - Dorian Johnson
TE: Greg Olsen - Ian Thomas  - Chris Manhertz - Jason Vander Laan
WR2: Curtis Samuel - Jarius Wright - Mose Frazier
QB: Cam Newton - Kyle Allen - Taylor Heinicke
FB: Alex Armah
RB: Christian McCaffrey - Elijah Hood - Reggie Bonnafon

DEFENSE:
LE: Bryan Cox Jr. - Efe Obada
UT: Kawann Short - Vernon Butler
NT: Dontari Poe - #Elijah Qualls#
RE: Mario Addison - Marquis Haynes
SLB: #Bruce Irvin# - Jared Norris
MLB: Luke Kuechly - Andre Smith - Antwione Williams
WLB: Shaq Thompson - Jermaine Carter Jr.
LCB: James Bradberry - Ross Cockrell
RCB: Donte Jackson - Corn Elder - Lorenzo Doss
SS: Eric Reid - Colin Jones - Damian Parms
FS: Da'Norris Searcy - Rashaan Gaulden

SPECIAL TEAMS:
K/KO: Graham Gano
P/H: Michael Palardy
KR: Curtis Samuel - D.J. Moore - Christian McCaffrey
PR: D.J. Moore - Christian McCaffrey - Corn Elder
LS: J.J. Jansen

# = Free Agent

Aside from a little shoring up and decent depth on the OL, the offense loks really good.  Would like to see help at RB and the back up QB get stronger, but I've got no real worries. Williams and Paradis need to stay healthy though. That's a bit concerning.

Defense, though,......ugh. need a lot of help there. I don't trust that DL trio of KK, Poe, and Butler to not suck. I don't know how the linebackers will adjust. I don't trust Shaq. We need help at safety. I just don't have much confidence in this lineup it really this new direction. I think it needs to happen, but I don't know that we've got the personnel we need or really the coaching to pull it off well. Gonna be really shaky ground.

Yep and I think people forget we lost 7 out of our last 8 games and not much has changed. That one win was against a team not really trying

I hope that I'm correct saying that Poe in his second year should help out KK more. If this happens (and that's a big if) then I would love to resign LOVE. He has been very consistant for us for the past three seasons. I think a front with Poe (in his second season), KK, and Love would  get pressure up the middle and be able to stop the run.  As much as I hate to say it we need a big WR to catch TD's in the red zone. If Olsen is good to go then the need is not as much as he has always been a key factor in red zone. I think Norv will have a few tricks up his sleeve as well. I think we are positioned to take BPA in the draft. I know some have voice BPA available as truly BPA but what I'm saying is BPA at position of need. If its DT, LB, OL, WR, RB, or S I feel we could upgrade at best three of those positions in the draft. If we truly get three upgrades then this off season was a success. If we upgrade two then it was a good off season. We can't fix all areas of need through the draft.

It is March gents, some of ya'll should relax a bit. I ONLY posted the 3-4 to highlight how it might look considering by now we know what the 4-3 base would likely look like given our personnel.

It's as simple as that, I don't see how anyone could look at the offense and say 'yuck' name a year in the last three where the offense was better ''on paper'' because all we have to go off of right now is paper.

The defense admittedly and obviously has gaps, but the positions we need to fill line up with the strength of the draft and free agency isn't over. Two quality DL, and a S and we are looking very solid defensively moving forward. And who is to say we don't address some aspect of this via free agency as we start to get into the (role / depth) phase of it.

    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
    • Well, we got our answer on Army today.
    • Not a chance the SEC could compete with the NFL.  In the large cities that are not in the Southeast, (LA, NYC, Chicago, SF) College football is an afterthought.
