Tepper expanding the ring of honor

For the record, Sam Mills was not inducted into the Ring of Honor because of his coaching, the "Keep Pounding" speech or his cancer and death.  He was inducted solely on his accomplishments during his time as a player.  This is because he was inducted on Sept 27, 1998, during his first year on the coaching staff.

Also, back in the mid 2000's the team added a rule that any new inductees must be retired for at least 5 years.  So Steve Smith would not be eligible until January 2, 2022 at the earliest.  However, Jordan Gross is now officially eligible.

I’m sure Tepper would change that 5 year rule in a heartbeat

Let's not throw too wide a net here, guys.

Honors like this are not for the good or the great, but for the elite. If you start putting too many people in here, you might have to "expand" the Ring of Honor to its own building.

Remember, the team is expected to be around for decades to come. You fill up the Ring of Honor now, do you have room to honor the players of the future?

It's the same reason we don't retire the  number of every player who had a good career with us.

If this were the case, Mills wouldn't be there.

I prefer the Mills standard.  You must transcend just being a football player who played for the Panthers.  Those nominated must be synonymous with Panther-dom.

My nominations: Smitty, Peppers, Minter.

If this ^^^ is all it means, Smitty is definitely most qualified, but I'd change the name to "Ring of outstanding players".

Really?   Ring of outstanding players??? Wow that has a catchy ring to it. LOL.

Problem is most football players are so entitled honor rarely plays into it. And unfortunately values and morals rarely play into winning football. Look at all the New England scandels.

Looks like it is time for me to lower my level of expectations when it comes to the "Panthers Ring of Outstanding Players" PROP or maybe PURP, "Panthers Ultimate Ring of Players".

A non player can be put in this so it's obviously not about athleticism. It's the Panthers Hall of Honor. Smith could get in because he's the Panthers WR GOAT. Gross could get in because of his impact/longevity/stayed a Panther. No reason to get all crazy about it.

Meh, I wouldn't include non-players.  I don't mind if they have their own ring, just shouldn't be with the guys that risked their lives on the field of play.

So does the statue come with this?  We need more statues. Also two other players that should get in are.

Hoover and Walls.

Hoover and Walls were good, no doubt, but we can't give everbody a statue or we'll run out of places to put them.

Learn from human history grasshopper.

The manner in which his ownership tenure ended was certainly less than desirable but despite this, if not for Ol' Foot Rub and his vision and contacts and tenacity and money there would be no NFL franchise in Charlotte, NC.

Perhaps, or maybe it would have taken another 5 or 10 or 20 years to land a team.

Having said that, JR nailed his sales pitch to the NFL, leapfrogging the favored cities to claim a franchise for the Carolinas.  He also assembled a great management team (initially anyway).
