See, here's where you have to start talking criteria...

Wanna compare the athleticism of Sam Mills and Luke Kuechly? Uuuhhh...no. But Sam Mills was exceptional for other reasons, and anybody who would question why the Panthers hold him in such high regard probably deserves a kick in the nuts.

Ask who's the better linebacker between the two of them, though? That's a valid discussion.

So is being an elite level player enough, or so you need to have something more?

A lot more than just being an elite player on the field. Sam was amazing as a player, a coach and a human. He wasn't just entertaining.

honest question...

would sam mills have this high status if he hadnt died of cancer?

i know he was a great player (never saw him play), but is it possible part of his legacy is held on a pedistal because of his tragic death and his inspiring attitude about it?

I.... don't think so.     It's kind of like Kurt Cobain and other musicians honestly.        But we really won't ever know.

im honestly asking how others felt about it, because I dont know where I stand myself on the subject

Mills wasn't just a player but a coach for years. Add what he meant to the Panthers as he was dying and his keep pounding mantra that has become the rallying cry for the team for more than a decade. He epitomizes everything good about the Panthers. It wasn't getting cancer but his heroic way of dealing with adversity that makes the statue and honor in the ring of honor totally justified. That is what we celebrate about him. He was much larger than his football accomplishments on the field.

Dude had cancer and revealed it months before dying to get his players to go win and keep pounding. He was an undersized player that went out and outplayed better athletes. https://www.panthers.com/keep-pounding/

We were lucky to have him as a player and a coach.
