The Draft Network: 3 BEST JULIUS PEPPERS REPLACEMENTS FOR CAROLINA PANTHERS

Last season, Carolina finished 27th in the NFL in sacks. Once the offseason started, future hall of fame defensive end Julius Peppers retired. The position was already a need, but that retirement has made it a glaring one.

In free agency, Carolina brought in veteran pass rusher Bruce Irvin on a 1 year, $4 million contract. The 31 year-old has 43.5 sacks in his career, and should provide a boost in sub packages and on obvious passing downs. However, at this stage in his career, Irvin likely won’t be relied on as the primary starting defensive end. On top of that, his 1 year contract suggests that Carolina will be searching for an answer at the position past 2019.

This puts the EDGE position at the forefront of their draft class. It’s seemingly becoming increasingly likely that Carolina will look to address the position with either pick 16 or pick 47, their first two rounders.

CLELIN FERRELL, CLEMSON

Clelin Ferrell feels like a natural fit for the Panthers in the middle of the first round, as a player who excels against the run and pass. While Ferrell isn’t a dynamic, bendy athlete for the position, he has outstanding power. His ceiling as a pass rusher is more limited than other first round EDGE’s such as Nick Bosa, Brian Burns or Josh Allen, but Ferrell has a solid foundation as a prospect.

no man.... nobody wants farrell right now hes hiding his terrible athleticism most have dropped him to the bottom of the first. 16 to high for him

I'd take Ferrell in a heartbeat unless we're moving to a straight up 3-4 defense.

Panthers aren't even showing any interest in this guy so why would Hurney go after him.

The hard part about that Clemson DLine is figuring out who was the catalyst and who were the Daeshon Halls. I would say Lawrence, but he was out for the playoffs and they still all played amazing. Hats off to all the scouts and draftniks, I have no idea how you figure this stuff out.

Out of that list I think our most realistic option might be Winovich in the Second rd. If Sweat drops it’s a no brainer.  But I think all the 3-4 / Hybrid guys might be off the board by 16.  Right now Wilkins might be the bpa when we draft.  But who knows on draft night.  

Wilkins in the 1st and Winovich in the second.  I keep going back and forth wether I like him or not. Right now I think I like him more than some of the others outside of Rd 1.  I do like his motor.

he better be the second coming of warren sapp after Vernon Butler being a bust and KK not doing much of anything last year.  I'm not sold on pass rushing DTs.

I'm hoping White falls to us, and I would be ok with Greedy but I really would like to go Winovich in the second.

Barnett? Really I didn't want him and for good reason. He has 2.5 sacks first year and 5 last year. Is that first Rd numbers lol.

Please god no to winovich..  He is the D Hall of Michigan.. Special team player or Brooks Reed.. is his future I promise... Watch his highlights most of his sacks are all out blitzing or QBS running from somebody else into him... He hardly beats a OT 1on1 and has 2 pass rushing moves.. (bull rush or being unblocked)
