Shoring up the DL/Kuechly's Prime/Draft Notes

Generally you beat the Saints with pressure, especially up the middle, or win a shootout. We're not a shootout team. The Saints did an excellent job of building an o-line to neutralize our d-line, and making KK nearly useless. RR saw this and decided to make a move to counter the Saints (aka the team we have to beat to go anywhere). RR/Hurney 2.0 made their move by adding McCoy and Burns.

Luke is a great LB, but he's also limited in what he can do well. Send him on a blitz and even very small RBs can completely neutralize him. Not good. He also makes his fair share of mistakes, misfitting gaps, taking bad angles, ect. He's human and he's not the key to modern football. I'd rather we spent more on scoring, but Luke inked an incredible contract for basically tackling. Not thrilled about that, but here is to hoping he has a standout season and doesn't look like every other good LB.

Luke is 27. If he plays at his current level or close to it for another 5-6 years which isn't out of the question at all then he very well may go down as the greatest MLB of all time.

needs a SB and a SB moment

Middle linebacker in our defense is the most important job on that side of the ball. He is the quarterback for the defense. It is about leading the defense, calling formations and getting the guys where they need to be. He is a coach on the field. That is invaluable. And Luke is the best there has been at analyzing plays and knowing where the play is going.  I love watching him and Brady (and Manning before then) go back and forth audibilizing as each other change the play back and forth in response to what the other is doing two or three times before the ball is snapped.

Seau and Lewis were beasts who relied on their own skills to dominate the competition. They led by example but weren't focused on making everyone else better. Urlacher played in a base defense most of the time (consistent with the times) so there wasn't as much of an emphasis on audibilizing and film study. Imagine Luke changing fronts and pressure schemes this year using 3 / 4 / 5 man fronts and different combinations of players from all angles. I expect this defense to be very stout this year. Keep teams under 20 and you give this offense plenty of chance to win it for us

    • Nah I love Thielen and he's a more than valuable player, but I think we have that role covered a bit with XL (in terms of the going across the middle) and if we were to draft T-Mac, he also thrives on crossing routes and absorbing hits while making crazy grabs. I'd rather have a peak Curtis Samuel type of slot WR over a Thielen, especially with XL and Coker already on the roster who are more in the Thielen mold from the slot than a Samuel, even if they aren't exactly Thielen of course.
    • Call me crazy but I'd like a Bersin type guy in later rounds that can learn under AT the tricks about how to get open. Bersin wasn't flashy or fast, but he caught every damn thing thrown at him. Someone who's willing to go across the middle and take those hits and actually hang on to the damn ball is something I think we've been sorely missing for a while.
    • I'm not going to try and go find old posts from months and months ago, but yes, you called me crazy for saying T-Mac over Hunter as a WR on numerous occasions. and yes, you are a Madden fanboy (and I don't mean the game, just in how you view potential roster management moves, you view them as if it's Madden where you can manipulate things to get whatever you want done). Again, that you don't see this stuff is an indictment on you, not me.
