Shaq Thompson is too small to play inside of a 3-4 and doesn't have the pass rush ability to play outside. We need two pass rushing OLB/DE hybrids and a solid LB to play next to Luke. I feel like this switch took the strongest part of our defense and now made it a weakness.

Said the same thing about Sam Mills in 1996. No I am not comparing the two except to say that size isn't the biggest factor in whether you can play linebacker in a 3-4. You can shed blocks with size or technique. Best to have both. But guys Shaq's size can be successful in a 3-4.

Also if its  just a matter of one guy playing out of his perfect fit for a year while finding a suitable replacement vs looking for two defensive ends that doesnt seem that bad. Or having many other parts that fit that can be utilized much better. Its not all about Thompson and we shouldn't scheme around him.

I hate it man, we've been a 4-3 team forever and its always been our strong suit maybe I just need to adapt lol.

I agree.  I loved our 4-3.  But I think my turning point was the Steeler game this year.  It’s not that their defense was so outstanding. It was the fact that we looked like we had no idea where they were coming from next.  And I am simply exhausted watching the NFCS just pick apart our zone.  We have become so predictable. Couple that with the fact the I am convinced that really good 4-3 DE’s go in the top 10 of the draft and are so hard to replace. Mid round 4-3 DE’s fail at an astronomical rate while you can get get 3-4 OLB throughout the draft so you can be constantly reloading.

Problem is we got lucky for years with having a stout front 4.. Rivera got complacent with that thinking and didn't innovate that system .. Now Hopefully with his job on the line he will be more imaginative with his defense and run some hybrid sets..

He's never played OLB in a 43.

So you were saying?

And edge rusher in a 43, is the defensive end position.

In the 34, it is OLB.

OLB is NOT interchangeable between the 34 and 43.

Bennett and Avril are at DE in all 3 snaps I posted above.

Rickey Jackson and Pat Swilling of our Dome Patrol (a 34 defense) were both OLB’s and were never considered as DE’s.

His has been, and still is as pass rush specialist.

Trying to state the he played a traditional 43 OLB would be like saying the Ford Pinto was a huge success for Ford.

So maybe you should be the one that should try.

You didn’t specify “traditional” 43 OLB, you said he “never played OLB in a 43”. Don’t try to move those goal-posts now.

Field Mouse was sharp as a tack between the ears and had far more heart than a lot of players twice his size, can the same be said for Shaq? That’s an honest question, I’m not familiar with his film watching prowess, ect. as I am with Sam.

As I said in my post. I was not comparing the two so not sure why you are. Simply said that Mills was told he wasn't big enough as someone commented about Shaq. I suggested size wasn't the biggest factor. You clarified why you thought Mills was successful. I would agree on Sam. And not sure Shaq has those abilities, he honestly hasn't been that great considering he was a first rounder. Obviously the team seems to think he is worth keeping for 9 million

I'm just happy Ron is finally comfortable to stay out of the offensive side of the ball..

And if this finally gets him to concentrate on being more imaginative with his playcalling and scheme hooray.. Ron being a disciple of Jim Johnson and Buddy Ryan was his big selling point in the 1st place.. Now I hope this is all a sign that he's ready to be innovative...
