Panthers 3-4 defense confirmed.

KK will have a chance to be one of the best 3-4DEs in the league.

It’ll be interesting to see what we do in the draft with this in mind.

If we are really going to be a 3-4 we better get some additional linebackers...and big ones at that. If you look at the Ravens their front DL are all 310+ and their OLBs are 265 each. So Shaq is going to have to play inside with Keuchly. Maybe they think that if Cox can get a little leaner he can play the other LB position opposite Irvin. Idk if I see Addison being nimble enough at 31 to make that transition.

The front 3 would be KK, Poe, and Butler? Has potential but a lot of question marks. Makes me think if someone like Christian Wilkins falls then he could be the pick bc of his versatility on the front. Could play NT or end in a 3-4.

No. We just remember what position he played for Seattle, and it's not the one you're thinking.

You dont remember. Take it up with Bruce:

"The Seahawks moved Irvin from defensive end to SAM linebacker after his rookie season, when he recorded eight sacks. The past three seasons while working more in pass coverage and run-stopping, he combined for 14.

"I honestly felt like if I stayed in that [Seattle] system, I don't think I ever would be the player that I think I can be in this league, and that's being a pass rusher," Irvin told hosts Bruce Murray and Kirk Morrison. "SAM outside linebacker is cool, but you can do your job the whole game at SAM linebacker and you'll have two tackles.""

He IS a pass rusher. So in a 4-3 alignment, he lined up as a DE.

I don’t think he had his hand in the dirt much in Seattle even though they are based in a 4-3. They have mixed looks though and he was a pure pass rusher for them, whether at LB or DE. Obviously not like TD at all who was a coverage and run support LB with some blitzes here and there.

He worked more in coverage and run support but was still mainly used as a pass rusher. They run a hybrid defense with mixed looks. Just because he was at Sam doesn’t mean he was playing a role anything like TD did at the Will.

I just read it as it is given. He is going to play OLB. No confirmation of anything. I still think we'll mostly be 4-3 with some 3-4 looks. People are talking about 3-4 like we are going to switch to it as our base. For that to happen, half our LBs need to gain weight including Shaq. We would also need more capable LBs as well. We only have about 5 good 4-3 LBs right now and only 1 other that can play 3-4 and 4-3.

That's changing the argument. Multiple people claiming he never played 4-3 olb when you have Irvin himself talking about it. He was at 4-3 olb of every depth chart for them past his rookie season

At least try. Come on. His own words. Go argue with Irvin and the Seahawks.

His has been, and still is as pass rush specialist.

Trying to state the he played a traditional 43 OLB would be like saying the Ford Pinto was a huge success for Ford.

So maybe you should be the one that should try.

i’m surprised we clung to a 4-3 for so long (even though it’s getting obsolete to classify defenses like this as most teams run nickel as their most common formation these days)

you look at the rest of the teams and it seems like many of them flipped from one to another over the years

I think what's going to happen is we will be base 4-3, but with Irvin at OLB we would mostly be 5-2 with Luke and Shaq in coverage. 3-4 looks will probably have another OLB or CB/S. Don't think I'd want the 4th guy to be a DE like Addison who I doubt has coverage ability. I'm also not sure I want to see our LBs covering a slot WR. We usually lose that battle. In summary, I think we'll have looks from not only 4-3 or 3-4, but 5-2 as well.
