I think he’s good depth but for people saying DE or 3-4 OLB is set now, it’s not. Irvin isn’t a great player anymore but he can be a good rotational guy.

Agreed. Some folks are rating him off of what he used to be.

I'm for it, but agree this is more depth / specialyy than anything else (kinda like Dwight Freeney was his last few years).

Looks like a backup for Addison. With Wes Horton a free agent they had to sign someone. Irvin is 31 and only marginally productive at this point. It's probably 50/50 he makes the final roster honestly depending on how the draft shakes out.

Just keep an eye on that Cap level... we were close before and this isn't going to be a cheap signing.

We very well may see another cut coming because of this.

Still, I think it's a solid pick-up. The guy's a Panther now, let's hope he tears up the NFC South this coming season.

I'd imagine we will extend Shaq soon.  His cap number is like 9 million.  would imagine we could save 3-5 by signing an extension.

I'd say greater than 50-50 given who our head coach is.

Or just dump Torrey Smith, but I'd be shocked if that happened.

Depth ✔️ Leadership ✔️ Talent ✔️ Means the Panthers won’t go EDGE in the first round ❌

There's very little chance that a one year stopgap deal on a 31 year old player will impact our 1st round draft selection.

He is not a starter.. He isn't a full time DE.. He is a situational player.. We still need to grab a day one starter in the draft or prepare to start Obada/Cox in our base defense.   This signing purely helps the transition to the hybrid scheme while also giving us a Pep replacement..

Oh don't get me wrong I think it's a good signing, one they had to make, but I'm hesitant to say he's going to have a big impact. They need veteran depth after losing Peppers and probably losing Horton.

Again this is about expectations.  He is not a probowl player, but when we are on defense and there is 1 minute to go and the other team is trying to drive, this is when it will make a difference.

Hence the Freeney comparison.

The percentage of plays where he produced pressure is good, but you have to pair that with the fact that he played fewer snaps than at any time in his career.

So yeah, situational rusher, like Freeney with the Falcons or Tim Harris back when he was with the 49ers and got paid per sack.

To the more than casual fan this is a B to a B+ signing,

  • Team staff teasing 34 /43 hybrid fronts - Irvin checks that box
  • Released veteran (37) year old TD 3rd LB in the 43 - Irvin checks that box (played the SLB in SEA's 43 Defense)
  • 3rd Down & Pass defensive end - checks that box

We are now still free to draft another EDGE player in round 1 without placing too much pressure and expectation, this is a very good signing for us. To those saying we should've kept TD, you're missing the point, this is two separate STYLES of player.
