Schefter: Bruce Irvin to Panthers on 1-year deal

Irvin had 6.5 sacks between stints with the Raiders and Falcons last year, and has had at least 5.5 sacks in all but one of his seven seasons.

He was the 49th-ranked player in the PFT Free Agent Top 100, and leaves just five of the top 50 left on the market.

Panthers have been looking for a rush end. They reached a one-year deal with one today in Bruce Irvin, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Irvin formerly was with Atlanta, Oakland and Seattle. Irvin gives the Panthers another veteran end opposite Mario Addison. They still likely will go with an edge rusher with the 16th pick of the draft, but this gives them more flexibility.

I like the signing. I could see Atlanta going EDGE at 14 ahead of us.

This draft is so deep that even if they do we will still get a 1st round quality edge player or Dlinemen in general.

This is the deepest Dline draft in decades for a reason..

A source close to the process said that Irvin was close to signing elsewhere in the NFC South, but vibed great with Panthers coach Ron Rivera upon meeting with him and got a good impression - that was one of a few factors in his decision to agree to terms this morning.

That maybe, but it also has a lot to do with the system and how he was used.

Yes, which also makes your question about him vs TD, a bit odd.  Their entire respective careers, they've never had the same responsibilities or jobs.  Technically, they've both played OLB, but a 4-3 OLB (not even considering weak or strong side) has a very different job description than a 3-4 OLB/4-3 DE/Edge rushing specialist.
