the other 1% are browns fans

I should change that pic.

I started using it because we were just as big of a dumpster fire as the Browns last offseason. Now not only did the Browns beat us last season, they finished with a better record than us and quite frankly it’s insulting to the Browns to compare them to us.

It's really starting to look like the Saints are continuing to kick the can down the road with Brees hoping that at some point he retires and let's them off the hook for it. If he doesn't, at some point it's really going to bite them in the ass but they're all in on the strategy at this point. I mean, honestly it's probably smart to try to capitalize on the final years of a HOF QB. When he retires it'll be full on rebuild time anyway.

I remember a couple of months ago that Saints were going to be in cap trouble this year, and would have to cut a bunch of guys.

Every year Saints are in trouble, yet keep signing guys, they play the cap about as well as anyone.

I admit to being pretty unfamiliar with the cap system, but logically speaking...there has to be a big hit to the cap in case of retirement after making a restructure like this, right? Otherwise, every team could just keep extending their players, then keep restructuring and pushing the cap hit down the road, and so on long enough until eventual retirement and then whatever astronomical cap number just gets wiped clean?

Unearned signing bonus money can be recouped after a retirement.

I hope there is a mechanism to prevent a team from.pushing the cap down the road until the player retires. I dont think they can escape their cap implications. It's not like hes converting his bonus to salary.

There is. The player and his agent not agreeing to it. Brees has always been pretty outspoken player pay, etc. I don't think he'd be a willing participant to leaving money on the table. Then again, maybe his priorities have changed in the twilight of his career trying to chase another ring. Who knows?

My suspicion though is that the Saints are just doing all they can to go all in on maximizing Brees' final years and they'll deal with the ramifications during the rebuild after his retirement.

But he is agreeing to it so its obviously not in opposition to his best interest. They both cant win by kicking the can.

They can push bonus Cap accounting but they cant make it go away.

If there is signing bonus money left in future years of a contract, the team can absolutely recoup that money from the player if he retires. In that respect, yes they can absolutely make it go away.

But asking Brees, who is no idiot, to restructure because you need him to and then asking for money back wont work. They cant ask him to draw it out for their benefit then penalize him for it.

It would work for a player retiring before expected but not for a HOF QB you are begging to stay and who doesnt need to

Which is exactly my point. The Saints are just going all in to try to maximize the final years of Brees' career and they'll deal with the fallout from it when he retires.
