Panthers think either Moton or Williams could move to left tackle

I'm still holding out for Jonah Williams at 16 to play LT and keep Moton where he is incredible at RT

Everyone always clamors for Alabama OL, but why? Yes, they always have a dominant college OL, but in terms of producing actual NFL talent?

Their track record is terrible.

According to this link, there are only two Alabama OL currently on NFL rosters.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/college

Schools like Wisconsin and Ohio State have six OL currently on NFL roster. Wisconsin has 4 OTs. I hadn't really done much looking into him, but Wisconsin's David Edwards might be someone we should keep an eye on.

He'd give up 2 sacks doing that.

Ouch.

You mean you ain’t with the “just slide Kalil to guard” crowd?

I just don't think he's ever gonna be healthy again.

Few would believe it, but at least early on Kalil was genuinely good. His body couldn't take the pounding though. Happens to a lot of good players, honestly.

Of course if you asked him, I'm sure he'd say he was healthy as ever. Football players are a lot like The Black Knight in Monty Python.  They could be missing both knees and a chin and they'd still stand in front of the coach proclaiming they're fine and ready to go back in the game.

I think when we signed Kalil, he said he was healthy and we gambled on it being true. Had it been, who knows? Unfortunately for us, that particular chance wasn't worth taking.

The Buckeyes and Badgers have certainly done well. I'm not that big a fan of SEC blockers in general.

Michigan used to be a great source for Big Uglys but I don't know if that's true anymore.

Michigan currently has 6 as well. Generally speaking, the majority of the Big 10 schools are a good place to look for OL.

Bill Barnwell's thoughts:

1. Address the tackle position. The Panthers have some work to do. The good news is that second-year tackle Taylor Moton had a very good season on the right side and appears to be locked into that role for the years to come. No worries there. Moton took over for Daryl Williams, who missed virtually all of 2018 with knee injuries. More on him in a second.

The left side of the line isn't quite as enticing. One of Dave Gettleman's last moves as Panthers general manager was to sign Matt Kalil to an inexplicable five-year, $55.5 million deal before the 2017 season. The oft-injured Kalil had a subpar 2017 season before missing the entire 2018 campaign with a knee injury. Chris Clark, who became the starter in Kalil's absence, was a stopgap and is now a free agent.

The Panthers find themselves in a difficult place with Kalil, who has a $12.5 million cap hit in 2019. If they cut him, they'll owe $14.7 million in dead money. Even if they designate Kalil as a post-June 1 release, they would owe $4.9 million in 2019 before a $9.8 million charge in 2020. No team wants to eat that much dead money, but Kalil might not justify the roster spot if the Panthers can find a competent left tackle.

This brings us back to Williams, who was a second-team All-Pro right tackle in 2017 and is now a free agent. The Panthers briefly slotted Moton in as their starting left tackle in place of Kalil before moving him to the right side once Williams reinjured his knee. One option for the Panthers would be to cut Kalil, re-sign Williams, then move Moton to left tackle. It's high-risk -- Moton might not be able to play left tackle -- but they might also end up with the best possible combination of tackles available from this three-man bunch.

More likely, the Panthers will let Williams leave, keep Moton on the right side and give Kalil one more year at left tackle. Taking a tackle in the first few rounds of the 2019 draft should be in the cards for Carolina.

Which begs the question:  Why was Moton NOT at  LT when your QB was being hammered into surgery and a 1-7 season this year?

Very proactive, we are not.

That is my point.  There is nothing that suggests they will play him at LT next year---nobody is saying they won't or shouldn't.  However, they had a golden opportunity this year--twice--and did not.  He should have beaten out Kalil--he did not.  He should have moved there when Kalil got injured--he did not.  Now everyone is saying, "Moton at LT, Williams at RT" Just do not see how that can be assumed, based on the facts.

On 1/8/2019 at 3:41 PM, MHS831 said:

We need C, DT, S, Nickel, T (unless you think Moton will sprout LT legs and arms over the winter), WR #4, and maybe backup QB.

On 1/9/2019 at 1:14 PM, MHS831 said:

Moton can play RT-- there is no indication that he can play LT except for a few of you proclaiming so because he had some good looks there in preseason and vs. Dallas.

However, these coaches see these players play every day, so I think Moton is either a RT or G here.  Sure, he could play LT in a pinch, and they even tinkered with him at C, but having Moton gives us leverage.

On 1/3/2019 at 2:16 PM, MHS831 said:

If Moton was a LT, he would have played LT in 2018.  They do not see him as a LT.  We could play him at RT again and not re-sign Williams, using the $$ we would have spent on a C...Larsen is not that good at C.

You were the first poster that crossed my mind when I read this thread thread.

How close did you come to punching a picture of Ron Rivera after you saw the title? :P

My first thought bro, was to slap him.  Many thought I was saying Moton cannot play LT.   I was not, I  was saying if the coaches  thought he  could play LT, only an idiot would  not have had them there last year.  Rivera keeps getting a pass. Thanks for thinking of me, Ice.

Personally, if they do NOT know which of the two can play LT,  that is also a problem.  You have a street free agent (Clark or Newhouse) at LT and you have a second-round draft pick at RT.  The same second  rounder who was not good enough to sit  Kalil or beat out Williams.  Now you want to suggest he will be the next  LT----crazy.  Meanwhile, your franchise QB can't throw the ball 30 yards.   Insanity.

So is RR willing to go into 2019 with a question mark at LT...AGAIN?  Or was he favoring Kalil because he was more of a veteran and he had the big salary?   There is no way to look at this where the coaches do not look like total dumbasses.  I would like to see a LT drafted.  We know Moton can play RT.  We don't know what DW can do (injury).  In addition, I would love to see a DW get a shot at LG.  He was OK at RT, but with a tender knee, maybe he should switch.

MHS831 and literally everybody else regarding Cam's LT situation: I did not like this.
