To be fair, Dan Morgan was "competent" (and much more) but he had a lot of trouble staying healthy.

I agree with the signing, but it's worth remembering that "competent" doesn't help if it's on the sideline.

Which is why it's a 1 year deal, at an under market value amount. There is a known injury risk. But who are we going into the season, hell draft with if we didnt get some type issues, either health or plain sucks. Kalil again? The guy that can't stay on the field due to play and health? Clark again?

Or would you advocate a Trent Brown type signing...... Out off all the crappy options, Williams is up there with one of the better ones. Now if we don't draft a guy to be in the 2020 mix at tackle, then yeah this deal is just kicking the can and setting us up (again) for trouble at OT.

I think Rodrigue said one of his offers was for 3 years.

There was some vague mention of other teams "not being a fit" but who knows what that means?

Unless there was significantly more than $6M guaranteed in that deal he may have felt that he was better off taking a one year prove it deal and staying in a system and with teammates who he's familiar with. That's his best chance to really cash in.

Gantt understands the concern...

He cant say nobody was willing to take the risk when he was signed the first day of free agency.  There was no time for anyone to even bring him in to assess the knee.

Gantts job is to make immediate content about everything every day. This was clearly a case of him just saying something to say it because it doesnt make any sense.

Had this happened in April then sure.

Daryl Williams, OT, Carolina Panthers

The deal: One year, up to $6 million
Grade: A

Williams is coming off of a serious knee injury that cost the 26-year-old virtually the entire 2018 season, but he was a second-team All-Pro in 2017. Given the thirst for useful tackles gripping most NFL teams these days and the presence of former Panthers executives with subpar offensive lines in Buffalo and New York, I figured he would have a nice market and end up getting a multiyear deal, even with the knee injury.

Instead, Williams will be going back to Carolina on a one-year deal that maxes out around $6 million. You can understand why he would want to bet on himself and try to hit the market after a healthy season, since he probably would be looking at a four-year deal in the $52 million range if he were healthy.

It's an easy victory for the Panthers, whose offensive line concerns look a lot better after re-signing Williams and adding Matt Paradis. This move likely displaces Taylor Moton, who impressed in his first season as a starter while filling in for Williams at right tackle. Where Moton goes next will be telling.

Then-GM Dave Gettleman made a huge mistake two years ago in signing left tackle Matt Kalil to a five-year, $55.5 million deal that was unsupported by tape, statistics or medicine. Kalil's $7 million base salary guarantees on Friday, and while you might think the Panthers would cut the former Vikings draftee, they also would owe $14.7 million in dead money on their 2019 cap if they did so. Oops.

If they keep Kalil, you would figure that the Panthers will give him one more shot at left tackle after he missed the entirety of the 2018 season. Moton would likely kick inside to play left guard, which would push Greg Van Roten into a reserve role. I think their best five-man line, though, is probably with Moton at left tackle, Van Roten at guard, and Kalil on the bench. It will be interesting to see if Carolina feels the same way.

    • The Raiders have already shown enough interest in Jeanty that anyone after 6 that wants him and would trade up for him, will already be calling the Jags for a trade anyways. The only thing them signaling interest in Jeanty could do if their interest was to trade back, would be to bluff the Raiders into making a swap with them to add draft assets while still drafting whoever they are actually targeting.
    • I love when people go after his YAC ability as if he wasn't 5th in the Big 12 this past season in YAC, because he was. And you can say his style of YAC doesn't mesh with this type of game, but that on its face is just nonsense, because if he's good enough to be 5th in a major conference, it clearly meshes well with his game. The reason you say it doesn't, is because you think all he is good at is making contested catches because of his radius, but because you haven't watched enough of his full tape, you don't realize that he's consistently used in the screen and short slant game to get the ball in his hands because he actually is a solid YAC guy because he's surprisingly agile for a player of his size.   No, he's no Tyreek, but he has more than enough wiggle to his game that you combine it with everything he does at an elite level because of his size, and it makes for a guy who is going to be a consistent 1k yard and 10+ TD player.  He can be the true outside #1 that we need, but he's also versatile enough to be moved into the slot at times to scheme the ball into his hands against smaller nickel corners or slower linebackers. He's a slightly less physical Mike Evans but with more agility, my comp was always AJ Green.  He's going to be an elite #1 WR in this league for the next decade, if he's there and we pass on him to trade down for another WR, we will regret it for a long time.
